338-06 225 gr Accubond. Mild recoiling and seems to drop elk alright
6.5x55 160 gr woodleigh. Or 140gr partition. Stupid accurate. Nothing seems to stand once they are hit
223 69 gr scenars. Yotes don't go far no matter the distances

#1 303 British
#2 9.3x72R
#3 280 Remington
#'s 1 and 2care just because, I don't make a habit of hunting with them
As far as my reasoning g for picking the .303 Brisih goes, so it does everything I need it to do with a 150 grain Barnes TSX with one shot and everything dies within feet of where I shoot it.

My go to rifle is my 7mmstw, as it has been since around 1990. I have always liked the .284" bore and I like higher velocity. My deer/pronghorn and backup rifle is a 6.5PRC. I like the 6.5mm for smaller game, and the PRC makes good velocity, with great accuracy.

Moose and bears .338WM, 225gr Nosler Partition.
Whitetail/Mule deer .30-06, 180gr Hornady BTSP for 'open' country, in the timber .45-70, 350gr or 400gr jacketed bullets (Hornady, Woodleigh, Hawk doesn't much matter).
Walk-about 'bear defense' rifle, Winchester M-94 in .375Win with 220 Woodleigh Weldcore, which are designed for .375H&H velocity, I file the points flat, load them to 1900fps for max penetration.

Used this combo for 35+years for all big game...never ever failed. So why change it now?...

300 Winchester M700, 180 grain Sierra, Blacktail (290 yds)
30-06, M700 180 grain Hornady. (first, BC record book black bear 137 yds)
25-06 M700 117 RN, (second BC record book black bear, 89 yds)
7x57, M700 140 grain Partition. (biggest Blacktail so far, 165 yds)
303 Jungle carbine 215 grain bullet, (biggest moose so far 2 shots, 65 yds)
45-70 lever gun, 440 grain cast bullet. (80 yds big Blacktail) too many to list.
6.5 300 Weatherby, 140 grain on a bull moose (2 shots 770 yds).
280 Remington M700, lots of deer and black bear, I like it better than the 7mm mags.
The 6.5 -300 Weatherby Weatherby was still a wildcat back when I shot that moose (1986 ish).
For deer sized game, the 6.5-300 was a bit much and a lot of splat and very little left for the dinner plate.
PS, nothing has changed!!!!!

Specifically for hunting? Easy, made this decision over 40 years ago. Works so well I haven't felt the need to change a thing.
All big game: 30-06 165gr. Speer GS
Everything else: 22-250 55gr. BTHP
22LR for high volume eradication
My stock of 165gr. GS are the original dual core design, not the newer cup & core product.
