Northern Saw-whet Owl rescue
My sister was on her way to pick up my nephew who spent the night here with his cousin. In the middle of Sherwood Drive she found this little guy. At first thought it was a Saw-Whet owl. Boxed it up here and took to the vet to get checked out. Vet said it's in great shape and it might be a Burrowing Owl.
She took it back to the park and released it.
Tons of good karma going her way!

Thats pretty cool. Good for her.
Curious how she was able to catch it if there was nothing wrong. Maybe it got hit and was stunned?

That is a Northern Saw-whet Owl (not a Burrowing Owl).
The Vet is mistaken.

Cool! I saw one of those little guys right beside me on a branch above my head last year and I had no idea of what it was. Now I know.

X2!
Tiny little guys.
I was lucky enough to band Saw Whets, Boreal, and Long Eared Owls in SK.
The Long Eared Owls were spotted then lured into the net with a fishing rod and cat mouse toy. The fly fishing cast has many applications!!

pretty laid back, word is they will let people reach in and pick them up. saw one in January at Brown Lowry near YYC. middle of the day it had just caught a chickadee.

Vet figured it was stunned. Probably the first one the vet ever saw, so the miss identification. When you compare the photos online, its pretty obvious its a saw-whet.
My mom just carved one so my sister recognized it as something special right away.
At our place, it was very calm, very curious peeking out of the box.

That's a Real neat pic, Owl in a box,
I had one watching me from a branch just a few feet above my head once, it wasn't concerned at all.

Here are some burrowing owls the boy and I found this summer. I would say you have a saw whet owl.

Those little Saw-Whet owls are very tame especially the first year born who don't know the dangers of the world . Even so they should not be handled if possible , but if needed put a towel or blanket over any wild animal to reduce the chance of shock which can be fatal .
