The princess and the buck.
After waiting a year to get her hunting course done and finishing it halfway through the hunting season, My 13 yr old daughter finally got to go out hunting for whitetails. We sat in our bale blind a few times waiting for her target deer. We had a 5x4 buck, a heavy 4x4 and a forkhorn which was her target buck. On our first trip out we did see the forkhorn in a slough bottom at about 125 yards while we were in the wide open stubble field on our way to the blind. I set up the shooting sticks for her and she did shoot over him, but he stood there while she loaded up another round. He started to walk around confused by what happened and ended up walking into the trees. It was a clean miss and she was heartbroken. After we got to the blind we had a few does come out but no buck. We sat another time and only does, so we decided to move the bales to the other side of the field. Monday Nov 21 after school we headed out to the blind with about 1 hour of daylight left. As we entered the field we seen a deer about 500 yards away by the trees and had to do a low sneak into the field to get to our blind. Once in it we seen the deer was still there at about 150 yards from us and it took us a bit to determine it was a buck as he was standing by the thick willow bushes. After a couple minutes she said she wanted to shoot my 300 win mag as it had a better scope on it. She lined up and the gun barked, the smack and the deer jumped up did a zig zag aound in the field, stopped by the trees and then dissappeared into the trees. We gave it about 15 minutes as it was starting to get dark and crept over to where he was hit. We seen some hair on the snow and a blood spray pattern every time the deer jumped when he ran. I showed her and said we should give it another 5 minutes. I had to get down on my knees to go on the narrow rabbit trail the buck ran through into the dried up slough bottom. When I stood up I seen 3 magpies were already on the deer on the other side of the slough about 60 yards away. I stopped and had her come to me and let her do the walk up to her deer. So proud of our daughter becoming a huntress this season and connecting on her first deer ... Janaia has been watching this buck for 2 months .. he has 2 forks ... so she nicknamed him "Double D" short for double dinner, which is what you would get with 2 forks ... It's been a mission to bring him down ... Janaia laid the smack down on her buck "Double D" tonight at 150 yards with the 300 mag ... she even got some scope bite for a little reminder of her hunt. I gave up a deer tag again this year so I could teach my daughter how to hunt as the same I did 2 years ago for my son. I can't even begin to describe the excitement the this has brought me as I have waited 13 years for this day.

Very cool story and great pics. Just wondering, why was she targetting the forkie when there were bigger deer to be had? Table Fare?
