Boat reupholstering anyone done it?
Mil has offered me her industrial pfaff machine, so I am thinking I have a winter project lined up. Can anyone offer helpful tips?
I am thinking that by using the existing material will of course be massively helpful, and when I go to sew the pieces together I will use a pencil line to follow very slowly, but YouTube and google can only teach me so much.
Happily I have an empty bay so the boat can sit all winter in the shop, and with the 18 year old leaving soon I have a room to sew in, just need to get creative.
Piping scares me.....

Piping is simple enough, you'd be surprised.
Take your old upholstery and a seam ripper. lots of pictures and number each piece in order of disassembly. You now have your pattern for the fabric you choose and number the backs of them accordinglyso reassembly is easier.
If this is your first time, get spare chunks of fabric and piping and practice getting your seams with them straight.
Mom was a seamstress, uncle did upholstery work, step daughter did fashion design in college ( don't ask) picked up a few things. Fabric comes apart a lot easier then welded steel if your seams aren't straight.

Trouble is I think you have to have any amount of artistic talent to do this, and I do not.
I bought all the vinyl today, enough to do the cover and entire upholstery, just have to get the machine here from the MIL, and get at ripping seams.
More to come......

Pics would be nice.
Yanno a good welder would just weld that upholstery.

I Don't buy it. Welding from a plan takes as much artistic know how as sewing does. You do need to learn how to keep your pieces straight, know the rate on which the fabric needs to be fed through, what type of foot to use, just like what shielding gas to use, amps, and feed rate depending on your thickness of material.
Man up and learn to sew
But seriously, good luck and I'd love to see pics

I think I got it reworded in the way you were trying to subtly convey....
I have never welded from a plan, everything I do is think cut weld go. At least, if nothing else I can cut apart the old pieces and use them as a template for the new ones.

We were thinking that, the only time I ever really experience mild chest pains was when I went to a body or upholstery shop. I generally walked out saying things like "maybe it will hail, and the countless thousands of dollars I paid into insurance will finally pay back".
A couple friends have already told me if I can get my boat to look decent they have some work they would like to do.
I might get my 18 year old daughter that is looking for work into it, then we can set her up in her own shop.
I was thinking of gutting her bedroom when I throw all he..... err I mean when she finds employment and moves out voluntarily, but maybe I can get her into something locally for now!
Or, my 16 yr old son....
Ideas ideas ideas.......

ummmm....it ain't all THAT bad Ken...really.
..Once you get past a few things, like...stitching your finger a time or two.....jam it under the needle set a few times......break your last heavy duty needle as soon as you go to start something.
LMAO....Seriously tho...When I needed something done, I HAD to do it myself, so I went out and bought a 400 dollar Kenmore sewing machine at Sears!
I started by making nylon gun slings. Something no one else had, and I wanted.
Then, I slowly progressed to putting zippers in my hunting clothes....new padded shoulder straps on my backpack... straps on this, buttons and snaps on that.
THENNNNNN....The little wifey and myself even made some reversible clothes for the smaller ones, polar fleece jackets for us. I did a few orange vests too...just to prove I could.
BUTTTT...beware once your talents show themselves, all dignity and humanity will be taken from you ....it's gotten so bad my youngest daughter(14) asked ME...to fix her bra strap. ~~~~~~~~~~~sighhhhhhhh~~~~~~
I bared my soul...now you be sure to bare yours and keep us posted !!

Not at all, both require the same level of artistic and technical skill. If you can weld, you can sew.

Pretty much said the same thing
Don't get so worked up about it: upholstery isn't that hard. Just a new skill set to learn.

hehe- I know, actually, truth be known, I have run a sewing machine or 2 in the past. I learned to sew for the same reason I learned how to build a house, do cement work, wiring, framing, mechanic work, welding, machining, fabricating etc; so I do not have to pay someone else to do it.
Loving the replies though, thanks guys.
There will be pictures once I get going. I am into it for a grand already, and that was just today. I find if I put money into something it happens, procrastinating is out the window once the money hits the counter.

I am hoping to get out a couple more times before the snow flies, already looking forward to this weekend, was invited to go with a friend to slay some Walleye.
Then asap I will be stripping out the parts one at a time, or matching sides at a time, tearing apart and rebuilding.
I'm actually looking forward to this!
