Cleaning Hair off Game
Do you guys have any special tricks up your sleeve for this? When I get home and hang up my game I usually spray it with water first if its warm enough out or wipe it with a clothe and water to get most of it off.
There is always a bit left on which I have to pick off one by one.
Anyone have tips on making it quicker?

Odd but works
Learned this from trapper -
If you use the deer tongue it takes the hair off really well.

As soon as I get it skinned I wash with warm water, if you let it cool then it becomes tough to remove. If I don't get it all of then I wash the meat when I'm cutting it up really well in a bowl of warm water.
The tongue really? I might have to give that a try next time.

Propane torch on a 1lb bottle and skim over the hairs to singe em off. No it will not bother the meat , it does smell a little but is quick and effective. We do it before cutting up all our deer. Works like a charm.

I always use a small blow torch set on low. Burn the hair off then give it a good wipedown with clean water. I've never had an issue with harming the meat and it comes out shiny clean every time.
Take your time do a good job and you won't be sorry.

If at all possible I like to skin the animal starting at the ankle where you attach the tag. Then once we are home, skin out the rest of the animal working from the ankle with the tag. Then do the gutting. This keeps 99% of the hair off of the meat.

We be as carefull as possible when skinning, and then run over the carcass with a sharp knife and this seems to skim off the any hair we inadvertently managed to leave behind. I was told this trick by my old butcher, who also said never ever wash your carcass.................

I use a blow torch as well also When skinning try cutting with the hair instead of against it. Then you will not cut so much hair off that it gets on the meat.

According to my butcher, you should never use a blowtorch. Apparently it leaves a slight burnt hair taste that leeches into the meat. I use my skinning knife and clean the hair off and rinse and repeat and dry until I am satisfied with it.

Dont know what would be the difference on the grilled meat. Unless your like me that burn the hair with the skin on it which adds more flavour for a stew or have the skin as a finger food when drinking whisky.

It doesnt matter to me what you say. If he wants the meat cleaned a certain way, thats they way he will get it. I dont care the reasoning behind it, I just know the meat tastes great and Im not looking for another butcher so I will continue to do what he asks for.

RElax;
I am not suggesting you do it how I do.Run it through a car wash if you like ,I am just say that in my experience , burning the hair of does not taint the meat in any way. If it did I wouldn't do it.

No offense taken, Im just saying I will get the meat prepped to my butchers specs before I drop off to him. To each their own, I guess someone could always try tweezers to get all the hair off too.

I can see the blow torch metod would give the meat a funny taste if you had to burn wads of hair off the meat but if it is just a little bit then it works great!!

I have heard a masking tape lint roller works...but never tried it. Usually a bucket and a cloth works fine...

I use a damp, large, thick density(stiff) sponge. Place a tarp under the quarters and make light sweeping motions downward. Periodically clean the sponge in a bucket of luke warm water. Does a great job in short time. Wash the tarps and sponge off and save for next year/animal.

true enough I am talking about small amounts that get on the carcass where you cut the under belly. We usually brush off the bigger bits and burn the left overs just before we start processing
