Id assume it has never been done if the owner doesnt have proof. A lot of people never change them. Yes, Its a ticking time-bomb but I know quite a few people who have never got it done.
Plus, there is a good chance if it was done it was done at a private shop and there was no proof other than a receipt for the work performed.
I just did the timing belt in my wifes Pilot and it showed no signs of wear at 162,000 Kms. So, it didnt need to be done but I sure feel a lot better now that it is changed. If the water pump is leaking that would cause the belt to deteriorate quicker.
As for price, two private shops wanted $1400-$1600 for the timing belt change out along with the water pump at the same time. I bought the parts through Bumper to Bumper for under $400 so I saved a good $1000 doing it myself. Not an overly difficult job but more than some people would feel comfortable taking on for sure.
