I went a googling and found this; http://www.hook.tv/player.php?key=2CD015901F44E7B7
but I still think DaceJr., FH7 and Fishstix are bigger.
question; is there something small about a 26" Rainbow or Brown or Bull, that's pretty big and to consistently catch that class of fish all year round (we know the diehards), it's pretty darned awesome!
No they aint Gerards or Shuswap monsters but the Bow is a pretty nice stream to fill your dreams. And stupid close.
Longest Brown I've seen caught was the during the 2010 season at the Glenmore Rez,, 33 inches.
close 2nd for length, was a Brown from the Highwood.
then the Bow comes 3rd for length but 1st for girth, it was like a kids thigh.
Some trout are like footballs, short & stout and others like sleek torpedos
I would say the big trouts are below Bassano, and they're crazy due to their toothy neighbours.
So BeeGuy,,, start a fishing competition for 30inches or better from the Bow and the fish needs to have a tape measure brightly marked at 30 inches and that days Calgary Herald in the picture. Ling, Pike, Sturge, Walleye and Suckers not allowed but can post.

Lets all go fish at 19th ave before they close it for the browns to spawn. Just Like FH7. I will be one of the nay sayers about The first few fish being close to 27" Look at the size of the other brown that was posted at 29" that fish is substantially longer then the browns posted in the first post. Nice fish either way, too bad they're so dark.
Biggest i've witnessed in real life (forum doesnt count obviously) Was 27. Of course i didnt catch it but seeing a trout that big is pretty sweet.

On a serious note, the "toilet paper" in the Bow River is actually Didymo (common name). Won't hurt you, but frustating for fishing, and harmful to the environment. Smothers everything. Been working on some research, but without getting into details, it's just not good stuff, but also not dangerous. Main problem is how it just coats the riverbed causing damage

That Didymo "Rock Snot" is getting everywhere. It's Bad shyt!
Anglers and the public spending time in rivers need to learn about it and try to stop spreading it to uninfected water systems.... But that's a different thread....
I've never landed a 30+ inch trout from the Bow, lose several every year.
The largest bow's and browns that I've landed were 28-29".
The big guys are there, but when you use a light tippet and they get across current on you, it's pretty tough to keep them on the line....
When you hook a big fish on the Bow, RUN!!!

Nice collection of bow river bows there Bob.
In my experience, I get 1 bow for every 10 browns in the BR.
I might need to start fishing some faster water.
cheers

When discussing this bullies aren't part of the discussion because 30+" bullies are fairly common and we're talking trout, not chars.
I have had several tanks to my boat over the last few years but nothing has ever broke the 28 1/2" mark, lots of 24-26" fish this year, but never anything where I would post a pic saying it was 30".
The first guy to have quality pics with a 30" Bow trout with the tape in the pic will become and instant local fish star..... for what ever that's worth
|
Agreed!!! I use to work at one of the flyshops, I have talked to most of the guides in town (not to mention hundreds of customers) and none of them have caught or seen a 30" brown. Most of which have fished the river for 20+ years. That's not to say that a couple of 30" browns are not in the river but catching them would be EXTREMELY rare! Until I see a pic w/ a tape measure 29" is the benchmark. Looking a pic is too hard to tell, it's like looking at picture of whitetail deer saying it's over 213" (new world record, which happens almost every year but it never is) w/ out it being officially measured.
Just for example here is a brown trout that I caught that is only 23", by holding him out towards the camera it appears much bigger (still doesn't look 27' but I could likely pass him off for 25", same as a 27" could look 30"). The same technique is being used in the pic by FH7 and fishstix (a shame no pic w/ a tape, that fish could really be 30"). I believe the fish in the pic by TFG is every bit 29". My point is w/ out a tape on the fish it's very hard to tell it's true length.
What floors me is people claiming to have seen or caught browns in the bow up to 34" or 15lbs when no proof exist of a 30" brown. Here is link of a 32 1/2" (approx 15.9lbs) brown pulled from the Madison River that would eat the browns on this thread for lunch... If bigger browns then this are in the bow then WOW is all I can say!!! Note; the link might kick you out to the home page, if so click "categories" (at the top) and select "archive". Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "older entries", do this twice and you will see it under the 2008 entities "The days of days - fish of a lifetime".

Happy fishing everyone!!!

ask walking buffalo for the boundaries then work your way up from the rez.
ask jeprli how big the trout are in the rez, if anyone knows, he's the go-to guy.

Was with a buddy at the mouth of the elbow one winter. 29" brown, I taped it myself. Snapped a pic but buddy has it and haven't heard from him in years. Which sucks. But there is 30+ inch browns in the bow no doubt, the elbow feeds alot of big ones into the bow too. Which was where the 29"er came from.

I dont recall how long this guy is but Im 6'4" and 245lbs.
Same day different fish
I remember about 15 or so years ago when I was 13 my dad would drop me off at the old weir when you could use bait, my dad worked construction and I would get him to drop me off on his way to work at 5am. Myself along with about 6 or 8 religious older fisherman would be there fishing in the rough water of the weir for big browns using 4oz pyramid sinkers and a couple of homemade roe sacks. I caught my biggest brown I have ever caught on a cold October morning, I have a picture of me and that fish that one of the older 50 plus year old guys took for me, we measured that fish at 31" and around the 14lbs mark a huge male with a big gnarly hook jaw. I remember saying its so big it looks ugly and some random guy saying "son this aint a beauty contest its fishing"
Every since that morning I have been hooked on the Bow.
My personal best day on the bow was on a September evening fishing below the weir casting floating Rapalas to rising Browns, I have 17 polaroids of 17 different trout I caught between 6pm and 9pm 11 browns and 6 rainbows.
As much as I have cursed at that river I have thanked it. Sometime I forget how lucky I am to be able to drive such a short distance to such a great fishery.
