Default Looking to get into coyote hunting..

Hey i'm a young guy (21 years old) looking to take up coyote hunting
to collect/sell pelts. I have my pal and sks rifle( red dot.)
I was looking for anyone to either give advice, or if possible take me under there wing and teach me some tricks of the trade.

I live in strathcona county and am willing to travel within a 150 km radius so if anyone is looking for a partner that would be amazing.

Any tips or hints will also do nicely,

Thanks guys in advance!

While a 7.62x39 will certainly kill a yote, it would not be my first choice for a dedicated dog gun.

As for actually hunting yotes, learn to call (or buy an electronic call if you have the money) and learn to shoot. If your interest is pelts, don't bother until November at the earliest, preferably late Dec-Feb.

I am aware of the ballistic limitations of the 7.62 x 39 mm round and plan on getting a more powerful and accurate rifle in the near future. Thank you for help as to when to hunt for pelt.

Anyone know any area's suffering from high coyote population or were a guy can find more information online as to hunts?

I have hunted a lot of coyotes over the years. If you are using an SKS I would suggest against using any FMJ (mil-surp, full metal jacket ammo) as it is my personal opinion it can lead to wounded animals. I would either reload and use 40-55gr V-Max bullets or another PSP style bullet. Also with a V-Max or PSP you are less likely to get riccochets. Assuming you are hunting populated areas this MUST be considered. Some guys have had luck pulling mil-surp bullets and replacing them with V-Max.

No, a .308 is a .308 and a 7.62 is 7.62. Closes equivalent is .30-06. Anyone know where to get coyote calls and rabbit distress calls?

Default Calls

Any hunting or fishing store would have calls, even Walmart or crappy tire would have a few. Good luck!

Zakrow...I missed the point that you were using a 7.62X39....I thought you were using 5.56....hence the 40-55gr V-Max won't work for you.

Also using the 7.62X39 will be really devastating on the pelts if you plan on saving them to sell.

Yes it will kill coyotes....but its not the best for a "pelt friendly" cartridge.

.308 cal is 7.62x51mm

7.62x39 is 7.62x39mm

Closest equivalent to 7.62x39 in 30 calibre (power wise) would likely be the good old 30-30.

The 30-06 is much more powerful than the 7.62x39 (and slightly more so than the .308 Win).

You can buy calls at pretty much any outdoors store ie Wholesale sports, Cabela's, P&D's etc.

7.62 x 39 is actually .311, rather than .308 x 39, if you shoot an SKS. Wanna shoot coyotes? First order of business is to get an appropriate caliber of gun. Personally, I like my .243

I hope you know that you don't have to tan hides to sell them if you have a trapping license. You can sell them stretched and dried. However you can't sell such hides to anyone that doesn't have a fur buyers license.

If you want to sell the public, then tanning is the way to go.
I use a product called

No experience necessary.

I'm a bit far to offer you any other help.

Best of luck.

Oh, I almost forgot. I own a SSK. I wouldn't use it for Coyote except as a last resort.

The closest ballistically is the old 25-20 or the 30-30. The 7.62x39 is about half way between the two, ballistically.

Grizzly Adams is correct. It shoots a .311 bullet which is the same bullet diameter used in the .303 British.

Soft tip ammunition would make too big of a hole most of the time and FMJ ammo would likely only wound unless the head was the target.

That would work but one has to remember that the SSK was designed to be mass produced by rather crudely equipped shops in the third world.

They are not quality guns. Don't expect pin point accuracy. You may get it, but only if you got lucky and bought a one in 1,000 gun.

Good Post KegRiver.

Don't worry about using the SKS, I had no spare cash to drop for another rifle just to use on coyotes too.

Just had to use my deer rifle, made a mess if I hit them in the spine, or it caught a rib on the way through.

If you use FMJ make heads shots and keep your shots within a really decent range, the SKS will work fine.

You can also google SP rounds , and then you have more flex in your shot placement.

Instead of buying a $50 or $200 electronic caller tear the squeeker out of a dog toy ($1 at the dollar store) They can hear those out to 2km.

Give me a shout, we can meet for coffe, heck we can pop out the first day you have off.

There are a lot of options for new hunters....especially in lighter varmint calibers. There are many rifle/scope packages out there that don't require a heavy investment. If you sold that SKS, you could almost land a Savage in an appropriate coyote caliber - 204Ruger, 22-250, 222 Swift, 223, 243 heck even a 25-06 (which you could also use for deer). Over penetration sucks because the force of the impact of the bullet is only partially absorbed. Get something that can shoot a round like the Hornady Superformance and you're laughing. Small entrance, no exit = a good pelt. Faster the bullet, the less the drop - your sks begins to suck at 120 yards. The Ruger has a muzzle speed of 4300f/s.

Now...the most important thing of all.....optics! It's fun to talk guns, but you can't hit what you can't see. I would say that anything less than 12 magnification gets tough, but that's just me.

Let's know how it goes!!

Also....get you WIN card and get a wildlife certificate. Welcome to the frustrating, yet rewarding world of predator hunting.

(later we can talk calls, scent, etc)

Best bang for my buck single call is the primos lil'dog it can produce most any needed sound various distress and howls.

I think the Canadian trappers association or one of the the big fur actions has a magazine that was nothing but fur prep.

Don't want to rain on your parade but the folks that come closest to making money with coyote furs trap/snare. But they are fun to hunt, you will be hooked the first time you call one in.

My first was a fox at 10-20 yards with a 12ga it was still running at me it took maybe 12 min from the first call to the shot.

Get a proper coyote rifle way before an electronic call.

Any Randy Anderson video is worth watching.

better gun up ! sks is for peppering hillsides with battalions of troops coming over the top. not precision shot placement at 250 yards on erraticly moving fluffy targets. unless.......for some reason its super accurate. then theres still the bullet issue.

204 or 22-250 is my picks for the ideal calibe. and buy two predator callers for in the winter. keep one defrosting by your chest. i have a les johnson designed ruffi dawg coaxer,im not sure but i dont think it freezes up. my primos cheaper ones are great too,but freeze up . cant help but get spit in it calling.

and a long-length bi pod for sitting.

buy a couple of hand calls , get permission , practice , once you have them coming invest more money than you can imagine in accuracy[you will want to hit a couple] and fuel to get more permission . enjoy at least till you need more area then buy electronics....... repeat

right you are, but I didn't say the 7.62x39 was a .308 cal bullet. I compared it to the 308 Win, 30-06 and 30-30.

Default yote and bow

I have a crazy question

has anyone ever tried hunting the yote's with a bow

Thinking it would be crazy tough but fun to call them in that close

or can they dodge the arrow.

i will admit i'm a newbie so i have no idea.
