Default saved me the rod today

I read all the discussion about "how to avoid the rod down the hole", I thought the best and easiest way is still to tie the rod with my chair.... I don't believe the fish will drag my chair down the home....

Set up around 2:00pm today's afternoon. Of course, didn't forget to tie my rod up with the chair... Went away for setting up the tip-up. A fish suddenly pulled my rod into the hole..........even moved my chair a little bit.... such a strong fight!!!! There was only a white string still attached to my chair when I run back to the hole. I grab the string and pull. My God, the fish was still hooked and fighting like crazy.... I eager to retrieve my rod since I just lost one this week and I don't want to lose this one again... I don't care about the fish anymore, try not to pull too quickly and wish the fish would escape....Finally the fish escaped and I eventully retrieved my rod....

here is the pic showing how I attached my rod to my chair

wow...a lot of work when you can buy a rod holder that saves it from going down the hole.

I screwed mine into ice, but still my rod was pulled down. I guess it depends on what angle you set it up and you want to be very careful. It's not 100% safe.

Good work on saving your rod!

I just leave my bail open if I'm leaving the rod unattended. It's easy enough to pop it down when you get back if a fish is on the line and running.

LOL. I just cannot get over the fact that guys dont either open the bail, or reel up before walking away. WOW. Not only to save equipment and prevent injuring/killing fish, but sometimes a guy invests some time in bites,, why not have the rod in your hand to maintain the ability to set the hook?
And what now,, really. Your little tether worked well, you saved your rod. Unfortunately it doesnt look like there is an extensive equipment supply,, and you now have a reel that is full of water. If proactive, that time spent disassembling, wiping, drying out and re-lubing could be spent somewhere else. Or you may just consider new rods and reels as collateral damage every time you go fishing, preferring to have new ones every time you go LOLOL

Stilll not sure why you wouldn't just open the bail? Makes alot more sense than screwing around tying things to chairs.....

Default Rod Locker

Rod locker works great and would have saved me a rod & reel if I had bought one BEFORE I saw my rig dive down the hole following a big rainbow. Note the 11" diameter base so it can't enter even a 10" hole. Now I set the drag really light for minimum resistance to the fish but enough to make the rod bend and move about to signal a strike.

The reason I did this is that it's very easy to forget opening the bail when walking away or there was a bite elsewhere under the tip up. My anther rod was pulled down the hole last week when I walked away having a drink.

Another reason is kind of weird. About more than half of bites happened when I walked away or set the rod on the rod holder...Maybe the fish biting my bait doesn't like jigging....

The simple answer is to buy a locking rod holder...but you seem to have missed the point. Ah well, cant win em all.
