I can imagine....I saw one softball-sized rock at the river's edge that probably had 500 on it. I also saw nothing rising on them, either.

If you don't mind answering a question or two (was talking about stones on the Bow just yesterday):
What larger stones are found on the middle bow (Calgary to Carsland)? When do they usually hatch (water temp, associated plants)? Size of flies?
Thanks

Right now what everyone is seeing is little Skwala (sp?) stones or winter stones. For the bigger stones we see in the summer, when the water gets to 10C they will start migrating out of the rocks, in Calgary this is typically around the week of stampede
Stones will appear lower in the system first and hatches will come off later they high upstream you travel

Thanks Jayhad. I thought it would be 10c or so. I assume these are "golden stones".

you got it, sometimes people refer to them as salmon flies (which are almost identical) I'm not 100% on my subclasses of Plecoptera of which there are over 3500, so the names could vary greatly but the Golden Stone is the one we all want to see and imitate in the Bow drainage

i grew up understanding the golden and salmon were 2 very different stoneflys.
I see very few salmon flys on the Bow but see alot on the Crow and Tribs

what the guide said. guys always talk stampede week for sure. i found last year to be a little later than the last few. a few came off the week prior and i had my first real good foam takes that week. mid week the following week she was in full swing. nite of the 19th and morning of the 20th was big bugs on a conveyor belt, and it continued from there. lots of competition coming down for your favorite foam. good times. the best.
this fella was caught on camera down in the oldman drainage country. golden stone or salmon fly? at the time he looked different to me than what i was used to seeing prompting me to take the photo.

I found this a helpful link when talking about AB insects. Still learning hatches etc but at least I can see the buggers and know what you're all talking about. *lol* Stone flies and Mayflies are under "other insects"

There were lots of midges hatching today, but I didn't see anything else. The wind finally sent me home. Well that and my feet were getting cold.
