Default Range Stories

Sometimes, shooters get called on their stories....Here's one that happened a few days ago. On the firing line, I heard a chap proclaim to his girfriend that no gopher would be safe at 300M. I was doing a barrel break-in at 100M and when we got to the 100M board where I had my targets, the chap looked at my groups (two of three fit under a dime)...and said "my rifle shoot like that all the time". I was just a tad skeptical, so I asked if that was the rifle he was shooting at 300M ...the one that he used for gophers. "Yes, my 22-250 is a real shooter!" So, I waited until he came back to the firing line with the target which was a rather large gopher ... one bullet hole was in the gopher, and the rest were spread around about a one foot diameter. I commented that most gophers would be pretty safe....

It must just be terrible timing on my part, but when I am present at the local range, most of the supposed 1/4moa and 1/2 moa shooters seem to be having off days. Most of them seem to have one great group that they keep bragging about, but they just don't seem to be able to shoot bragging sized groups at the time. The ones that are shooting honest 1/2moa groups always seem to be the same few people.

Took my son, who was 11, to the range with his Sako 300 win mag

He shot a 4 shot .5" group. I said he should try shooting one of my splatter targets and he says "nah, if I shoot more, Ill just be wasting ammo"

I hope you explained to him ammo and guns were made to be shot and not made to sit as ornaments collecting dust, and that practise hakes almost perfect

Yep pretty intersting stories come out there thats for sure especilaly when you bring range into play. Best is ask em how far something is away and then use the rangefinder on it quite often that 6-700yrd shot was well under 400yrds maybe less. I usually avoid threads like best group and best shots, most accurate rifle because if I am reading fairy tales I like a kid to atleast be present

The last few times Ive been out Ive met a good bunch of shooters. Second last time there was some older fellas with some nice enfields. I started up a conversation with him and he let me shoot his full wood mk4?, it was nice to meet good folks who were safe and friendly!

This was at the homestead range west of calgary.

the term bench racing comes to mind.

must suck having that kind of complex and trying to keep up with your own BS.

go to the range enough and you will see the guys who feel you need to know how accurate their rifle is...whether you ask or not....then they will proceed to shoot a shotgun pattern and instantly blame the rifle or smith who mounted the scope.

then they race off back home in their duramax with 9 stacked chips pushing "2500 ft lbs of torque"

I must be doing it wrong at the range; I show my less than stellar targets as well as the bragging-wall ones. It seems to help with a certain thing called improvement by way of analysis/troubleshooting.

Wise words once were told to me...
'It ain't about how good you can shoot, hotshot-but how often you shoot that good'.

Agreed. Some guys need to check their arcs before they let that BS bullet fly.

When I'm at the range I'm quite willing to let others try my guns out, it always makes me laugh when they put 2 or 3 shots within an inch and a half of each other and say man that thing is a real tack driver hahahaha

Smile Elk and I must know the same people.

The best one recently was a husband and wife, she had a 270, put a few near the bull at 200M and packed up and waited for hubby. He had a brand new 300 something rifle and after about 10 tries, never hit his target! At that point he announced that "it was good enough for hunting" and that was it!

After a cease-fire and target check at homestead, the other shooters and I were chatting (friendly crowd that day without an 'odd duck' in attendance) we were about ready to resume a hot range and this cow moose shows up and hangs out pretty much dead centre of the shooting lanes at about 60 yards for 5 minutes or so. I know it happens to many, but I get a kick out of it anyways.

I had a few people come out to a spot I used to have, that was in a coulee, had targets out to 300.
The 300 yd board humbled a few people. It is a fair bit further than a lot of people think it is. Most were lucky to hit the 2ft x 3ft board within the first three shots, alone hit the bull, which was 18"dia.
Always found it interesting, how some 4-500yd killers thought I was BS'ing them at the target being at 300.
Shooting it from the bench is one thing, sitting on your butt or prone is another again.

I was at homestead once when a doe and fawn calmly walked across the range during a cease-fire. The constant gunfire 2 mins prior didn't seem to spook them one bit.

I just about started a thread on here a few months ago. I was going to call it "Prove it Day".

Oh, you can shoot a dime from between a friends fingers at 1000 yards while he is walking. Please let me laser the distance for you. I will also pre-dial 911.

I sometime worry that shooters telling BS stories will try those shots in the field. Maybe if they failed the "prove it" test they may reconsider.

Well, I don't have much for stories as of yet. Although, it seems that every time I get out to the range, I manage to park myself on a bench where I'm on the recieving end of a constant stream of sks or .22 shells. You know darn well that these sks and semi auto .22 shooters just leave a pile of shells at the end of their day too!

I'll just have to make sure that I bring my 10/22 and buy a 50 round banana or 100 round drum, position myself accordingly and let em fly!
