Well, I have all the gear and a few guys that are gonna show me the ropes on sturgeon fishing. I cant wait till this weekend. Been waiting all my life so far to catch one of these big ol suckers. Te guy thats taking me on sat has caught 3 fish over 48lbs on tuesday, in this spot hes taking me too. I know its a couple days early but I will be back to post some pics. Hopefully I can hook into a 5 or 6 footer! im sure ill sh!t my pants if I do. FYI if I get my sturg ill have only 2 species left of the alberta game fish I have yet to catch!

good luck on your quest. i'm still a sturgeon virgin and haven't caught a sauger either. once those are off my list i will have to try for the grey (ghost?) trout that are only found in the high lakes near banff.

might sound funny but im thinking of targeting a stonecat in the milk river just for the cool/odd factor of alberta fish. anyone know if they are in there in catchable numbers? are they very rare or do i have a decent chance at catching one if i target them?

All of the trout, but the brown. I had a good chance this winter but my hook broke at the hole so he got away. The golden I had was just over 9" long, small but I still count it lol

I know that sturgeon get pretty big and are extremely powerful.
I don't think you need ropes, though; 50lb braid will do nicely...
Good luck!

Good luck on your quest. I am more than a few species behind you, but hoping to catch up this summer.

Well after a 150yrd straight run on the 3rd tightest setting of drag, I broke my rod and snapped 65lb test line. I lost my first sturg. I did manage to help or assist in a catch of a 57" sturg. I caught a few goldeyes and a whack load of suckers a few nice ones too

Wow, what kind of rod were you using?
Seems to be a theme lately.
