Seen one while out scouting. Stood back for a bit and watched them. Couldn't believe the amount coming and going. Neat to watch, thank go I seen it though would have hurt real bad! I find just the regular wasps are really bad this year. In laws got stung while camping this weekend. They were just sitting in the chairs when out of the blue got "attacked"!

I got into a nest of them one time after I made for shore to wait out a storm while fishing from a canoe. I sat down on a log under a big pine tree and then all hell broke loose, I only got one sting on my elbow but it swole up pretty good and made paddling back to camp a painfull ordeal. Hate those horrible black buggers.

Sort of allong the same lines out in Saddle Hills I was servicing pumpjacks and a very determine swarm of wasps had made a nest right in the horse head! I can only guess they must have got a good start while the well was down at some point and then refused to move out once it started up again.

Can anyone link me to an image or site that shows what they look like?

I am not familiar with all the wasp species here yet, and it would be good to know what to look for, including what the nests look like too.

Years ago when my brother and I were in high school, we went with church camp canoeing down the north Sask River. The first night our of Nordegg we set up camp and my brother went up the hill to go to the bathroom. A short while later he came screaming down the hill waving his arms in the air and we all thought a bear was after him. As he got closer we could see blood running down all over his face, arms and chest with black things on him. He ran past us down to the river and jumped in. When he surfaced a couple of hundred yards downstream the wasps were still stinging him. We stopped counting at 40. Within 10 minutes his temp went way up and he started shaking uncontrolably and collapsed. We got him into a sleeping bag and took turns soaking towels in the river and wrapping them around his head to try and bring his body temp down. It was 3-4 hours later that his fever broke and he started coming around.......very scary incident as we were a 3 day canoe paddle away from Rocky Mountain House and the nearest hospital.

Probably doesn't happen often but when it does it is brutal. My brother stepped on a stick on the ground which disturbed the underground hive and they went straight up his body and started stinging him.

These things: http://www.insectsofalberta.com/sandlovingwasp.htm ?

This thread may have cleared up a mystery of sorts for me. I assumed it was some kind of hornet but it felt like i got shot with a high powered air gun loaded with darts dipped in acid.

The burn got worse and worse over the course of 5 minutes. As fast as it occurred, it disappeared.

I can't even imagine what taking one of those to the nads would be like.

This thread is going to give me nightmares.

Is there a mound on the ground to indicate a nest, or is there just a tiny exit hole?

I have never seen anything like that....ever. Wow they sound vicious. I too would like to know if there is any visible indication of the nest.

We use to find the odd ground nest out in the back forty.
Usually in something soft like a moss covered rotten birch log.
I have encountered them in the dirt as well.
One time my cousin and I snuck under the fence into the Dept. of Hwys yard to play in the great big sand pile.
Well I must of stirred up the nest when I crawled through the washout under the fence.
My cousin got stung twice on his way through, and we spent the next 4 hours contemplating how to get out of the yard as it was after hours and the gate was locked.
Barb wire around the top of the chainlink. Long story short we got out and then proceeded to bombard the nest with mud balls.
Have fun digging your way outta that wasp...........hahahahahaha!
My other favorite thing to do to a ground nest is to seal up the entrance with a stick (preferably without getting stung) works best at night.
Then throw a pile of brush on and light her up!!
Then remove stick from entrance and watch them burn!!!
Good times......... you can never say you're bored on a farm.

Default Last Wed

I was out golfing, and on my last swig of a beer got one in my mouth......fortunately I had the presence of mint to spit instead of swallow, but the bastard got me on the inside of my upper lip as it exited......... 1st time for me ever getting stung....so I guess I am not allergic....... after the swelling started to go down, about an hour, my top front teeth and gums were all tingly like when the freezing goes out after a trip to the dentist, and when I got home I ate and then passed out hard on the couch.......

New phobia now.........No more drinking out of a can for me!!!!

The first nest we came across was the usually grey paper mesh that was hanging in the lower willows, the next one was in a rotten tree stump that a bear had been ripped open and the last one was in the ground along a game trail! The last one was a unseen ground bomb.
We're pretty sure it was either yellow or black jackets that got the dog a few months ago, poor girl was so swollen up in the face and we were way back in the bush camping. We just keeper an eye on her for breathing issues and come Monday I went to the vet and was advised to go to the pharmacy and get some benedryl and polysporn for her scratched areas. It works like a charm.
I'm hoping a few more cool mornings put them to bed permanently!

Look, listen and live.

My uncle almost died after being stung this way on the tongue. His tongue swelled so badly, he was unable to breathe.
