I am A Kiwi and there is no longer concidered a pure strain of elk, due to cross breading with red deer. attempts are being made to cull out red strains, an imposiable task, Fiordland is very ruggered and steep,
Also the best hunting times of the year are on a ballet system.
Now for red deer, sika, chamious, tahr and others there is world class hunting.
One third of NZ is crown land and forest park, you require a permit (free) to carry a firearm on crown land normaly valid for three months and you are good to go, bear in mind you can hunt all year, so game animals close to easy axcess road ends will be well pressured, best to walk in half a day or so and go exploure, there is great hunting in them hill.
A good level of fitness is required.
