Default 17 hornet

Ordered a savage model 25 in 17 hornet last winter and it finally arrived over the weekend. During the last few months I was also able to purchase a few hundred rounds of ammo for it. The ammo looks like a 17 hmr cartridge on steroids. I am going out to the range tomorrow to try it out and will post the results.

Default neat round

Congrats
You must be the only boy on your block with one of these. Read a lot about them on Saubier.com great small caliber web site. Post some targets if you get a chance. FS

So what's this new cartridge all about anyway? I have heard a bit about it but I don't know what is so special about it.

The only thing new about it is that it is commercially available now. Its been around for decades. Neat little cartridge.

This cartage has interested me for quite some time been wondering what kind of cost the ammo is though now that it is commercially available (sort of)?

According to Hornady, the 17 Hornet has a muzzle velocity of about 3600 fps., a similar trajectory to the 223, with light recoil something like a 22 mag., I assume depending on bullet weight and barrel length. It's supposed to be effective to around 300 yards on varmints. Ammo is not expensive and it sounds like a great round to spend a day watching gophers get misted. I imagine it's quiet as well. What's not to like? I think it will be a commercial success. I will likely get one, but probably wait at least until next year to see who might chamber it.

Sorry for taking so long for the update. When I went out to the range there was a 20kh crosswind. After sighting the rifle in I fired a three shot group at 100 meters which measured 7/16 of an inch. I will head out next days off, fire some 5 shot groups and see what this gun can do on a calmer day. If it doesn't get any better than that I'll still be okay with it. The rifle itself is heavier than I would like. As far as where I oredered it from, last January I asked my local dealer in Bonnyville to bring one in for me when he placed his next order.
