Default Assaulted at Lac St. Anne (The Narrows) Last Friday

Last Friday, October 19, I fished The Narrows on the Alexis first nations reserve with a friend of mine, who had 3 Walleye tags to fill. We caught a ton of fish and came off the lake at around 5 pm with one tag filled. We were packed up and just had to tie my boat down when a green minivan showed up. An older gentleman was the driver and he asked my friend how the fishing was. As they talked, a young girl started to pipe up in the back seat about how we had to pay for parking and how this is her land. She was clearly intoxicated. She then got out of the van, got in my face and demanded parking money. When I refused to pay she sucker punched me in the ear. Then she tried getting in my car, opening the door. I shut it and my friend stood by the door. The young girl punched him in the nose, then ran to the driver side of my car and broke my side mirror off. I was only able to get in my car when she ran over to a nearby fire pit and started hurling large rocks at my car. Two rocks hit my car and we had to peel out of there with my boat not tied down. We luckily got out to HWY 633 without if flying off. My left wrist is broken and in a cast. We were outnumbered. I am not going to hit a woman. My boat was not tied down and I was concerned about a gang coming out if I defended myself by hitting her back. There were a lot of factors that worked against any thought I had about fighting back. At no point did either of the 2 others in the van attempt to stop her. IMO they are just as guilty. I have the RCMP investigating the incident and have spoken to the band, as well. I have been asked for parking money 20 times out there, but I have never been assaulted for refusing to pay. Let my incident be a warning to others NOT TO PARK AND FISH AT THE NARROWS, as you run the risk of being the victim of a shakedown attempt, and being assaulted and having your vehicle damaged if you dont pay-up.

They were outnumbered because of the others just watching. Even though the one girl was attacking she had back up if they had fought back. Think before you make a dumb comment.

Sorry to hear about this Son! Ive had a few small altercations at the narrows and it can definatly get scary at times. You made the right choice by not fighting back and just leaving, you never know what they are going to do.

Default just curious

do you not need to have a permit from the band to access the lake from the reserve? I know you do down south. if you have the permit they have no right to ask for anything.

Exactly. You don't know what people are going to do, or are capable of. Who knows who these people had on speed dial to come and kick the s*** out of me if I hit the girl. It seemed a bit like of a set-up.

The other scenario, if I hit her, is that I could have been charged with assault, myself.

It is good to see that there are others on AOF with some common sense.

. . . just wanted to share my experience to help keep others from, maybe someone taking their kids out fishing, from enduring the same thing.

Not that it would have mattered in my case, but the lady from the band that I spoke to today talked about how you can get written permission from the chief to fish at Alexis.

No, I did not have permission, per se. Neither the RCMP officer who responded to my call, nor the band rep. I spoke to said I needed to.

Tons of other people fish there. I'm pretty sure none of them have permission.

It is a non-issue for me going forward, since I won't be going back there.

Nice response tough guy. I bet you woulda hung a whooping on the whole Rez hey?

I grew up fighting Indians for no other reason than they liked to gang up and watch someone bleed.

You got out of there best you could have probably, bet your ***** they would have had back-up on the way. Thanks for the heads up. It's too bad you couldn't have Back handed that drunken moron but you would have payed for it.

Certain members will be along shortly to explain how they were the victim and your a racsist. Then this thread will get locked due to all the discriminating against them. AO in a nut shell. Flame away!

its not that what happened to you that was funny, it was the way the persons post who I quoted was put.

You have some pics of the damage she did? That's crazy stuff.

I've talked to a guy that fishes there alot and he said usually only one guy harasses people. And when other band members pass by over the bridge, they usually stop and get his butt moving along out of the area. I too have fished without issue, once asked for parking money though... But i showed my treaty card and told them to get stuffed. Then i was asked if they could borrow $20 anyways. Lol just can't win on some fishing spots.

Yet people seem to wonder why us "whities" generalize and seem to think the worst.

Sorry to hear that, and IMO sounds like a setup.

Young punks think they got it rough, when will the RCMP finally step up...

I taught cooking out on reserve for 3 years.
Have been in similar situations about 30 times.

Next time start drooling and smile at her and say" I had a vision"

Keep moving towards her repeating that mantra until she bolts.

I'm sorry, that was a cheap shot. Any physical confrontation can get real scary real fast. Getting the hell out of there was the right move on your part. But how on earth did she break your wrist????

There is a simple lesson to be learned here. DON'T PARK OR FISH ON ANY RESERVE LAND UNLESS YOU HAVE PERMISSION FROM THE CHIEF!! Get a written letter from him and keep it. If all else fails grab a tire iron and act like a complete lunatic that just got out of the nut house!

Default Here's One for You!!

...I was with a friend 3 years ago hunting in WMU348 just west of Mayerthorpe, we had a bull moose down and had it by our truck, 3 Natives rolled up and they all got out, I knew it was trouble when one of them reached behind the seat and pulled out a bat, I told my friend to spread apart and to take his gun off safety, they approached us and wanted our Moose, we declined the offer, the one with the Bat came towards my friend, I told them our firearms are loaded and the safety is off, if they came any closer they would only get one warning shot and then we play for keeps!! Well, the one native raised his bat so my friend put a bullet right by his foot, that was it for them, they cowered back to their truck and left, we got the Bull in back of the truck and left, guns loaded!!

Pretty Scary Stuff

I would urge you to rethink this, it’s a troubling situation for sure but in the end it will end up worse for everyone involved. It’s a shame this happened and I would be right with you in anger but situations like this can escalate quite quickly and both parties will end up losing. Going back there will most liking end with you in the hospital or jail, neither of these seem like good options.
