.243 versus 6mm

I am buying a gun for coyotes and wolves. I am looking at these two because they can be used for deer as well. I have never used either. I am looking for accuracy at long range. I will most likely buy a X - bolt or Saco. Any one have any experince on these two calibers.

I prefer the 6mm, but I don't think you will find a 6mm in either rifle you mentioned. 243 is more common and will be available in both the listed rifles...

You'll have to buy used, or do a barrel swap. There was a Browning Model 48 for sale recently, other than that you'll have to keep your eyes peeled for a deal. If you want to rebarrel a rifle I would buy a savage in a long action and get a 6mm barrel with anything from a 10 to a 7 twist, depending on what bullets you want to shoot.

Most manufacturers made rifles in 6mm Remington, its just being lucky enough to find one used.

The other option is to buy a .243 and get it reamed to a .243 AI so you can duplicate the 6mm rem loads.

Might be a few around.
I got one but not for sale.
Nicely balanced cal and rifle.
Cooper makes them as well.
Nothing wrong with a .243

I had the said rifle above ^^^ and in a moment of weakness i sold it.
If you can find the 6mm and reload 100% go with that, even though i have noticed a lot of factory loaded 6mm ammo available.

ive had both, performance almost identical. i love the 6mm, but 243 gets the edge for finding ammo and brass

I LOVE my Sako m75ss 243 !! Will be one of my boys rifles later.

Its the rifle I mostly use for predator hunting...sometimes my 22-250 in the same model.

Probably easier to find fsctory ammo for 243 over 6mm.

I have a Rem 700 in a 6mm. I love it. The reloads shoot great. I have never shot a .243 but I hear the 6mm is a little faster if that makes much of a difference!

6 of one, a half dozen of the other. Both came out about the same time and no difference to speak of. .243 ammo and brass are easier to come by. My Varmint caliber.

after having a 6mm, i found that there are so many other calibers that are more suitable (for me).
i like velocity so a 243wssm interests me the most.
the only real advantage was it is for a dedicated coyote and light deer rig. but my 257wby does everything better with the same virtual bullet.
i got some 6mm rcbs dies and some unopened IMR 4895 that are doing nothing for the last 26 years, send me pm if your into these.
not sure if the powder is even any good now.

I'm one of those one gun guys. i've owned a M77 243 for over 25 years. i've handloaded everyhting from 60 gr v max to 100 gr noslers. My M77 is accurate because its easy to shoot. Many whitetails and 6 moose later i've never been disapointed. Like ALL calibers bullet placement is paramount, know your capabilities.

It's no great feat to acquire a 6mm Remington

Barrels and reamers are made every day,....gunsmiths have to eat too...:-)

If the extra 50-100 fps are that important or you just can't have a 243 'cuz it's too common the 6mm is for you.
