Fly tying! alpine lakes?
It's tying season again.... so what's everyone go-to fly for alpine lakes? I plan on doing lots of hiking next summer, birdwood lakes, tombstone, Maude, etc...
Personally I always liked a small black wooly bugger or a #12 stimulator

Antistatic Bag Chromie, Sizes 12-16.
Micro Leeches. Colors: Wine, Burgundy, Brown, Black/red.
That catches me enough fish on the alpine lakes to keep me happy.

Oh dont forget scuds. Olive/green and pale orange. Have had some deadly days with size 18 olive scuds in the upper elevations.

Adams/ H&L (big & bushy), Parachute Adams (tiny), Large chironimids (BLACK, silver and red).
Planning on trying scuds next year, as I hear wonderful things.
Now if I could just figure out how to cast those countdown rappala's with my fly rod....

May as well have tied a piece of olive fluff to a size 18 hook. Sometimes its just something you gotta try!

Those scuds probably imitate caddis.
Hey Flieguy
You are really getting pumped up there prepping up. Make sure you practice your casting.

Im thinking more along the lines of hyella shrimp. The tiny little scuds that the fish can gorge on, early season. A size 18 caddis larvae is pretty dang small. But you never know.

If you want recipes go to http://www.sfotf.ca/all-flies/
Lots of these recipes are successful.
I like using a dark purple woolly bugger and various chronimid patterns.
X2 on scuds.

thanks y'all!
I am planning on hitting 10 back country lakes in 10 weeks next summer. I will start a thread on it with pics and whatnot when I begin my quest. Alpine lakes are some of my favorite lakes to fish.

Al the fish i caught in Alpine lakes this year where on slightly simplified version of an invicta (yellow wool instead of the golden pheasant crest and a blue hen hackle tied sparsed instead of the blue jay solely on the throat).
16 to 12 worked a treat, fairly fast figure of eight retrieve.
Small fiesty cut throats, decent Dolly vardens and some good size brownies (in a lower elevation lake...) all prefered the invicta to my other flies.
It's now my go to fly for all the still water!
Let us know how the tying goes.

forgive some of the ugly ties, my first scud and stonefly nymph attempt (i like tying streamers and dries, not a bid fan of tying OR fishing nymphs if i can avoid it).

The scuds look good, but dont limit yourself to grey! Olive and peach are must haves.
The leeches will catch you some fish.

So Flieguy, Are the lakes you want to hit local, or are you thinking of heading in places like Fortress or Malinge?
We might have some local patterns for you.

Here's a complete list of my plans:
Tombstone, Burns, Headwall, Invincible, Lake of the Horns, Loomis, Maude, Rummel, Smuts (Birdwood), Rawson.
I have not fished a single one of them before, but have fished other alpine lakes
