fly fishing near edmonton
Anyone know where to do any fly fishing near Edmonton? I'm moving up there next week and sad to be abandoning the bow.

Summer or winter? For winter there's not much... a couple streches of the NSR are open and you can get walleye/pike/saugur on the fly. I heard the Raven River is open for part/all of the winter if you want some challenging browns. Other than that, we don't have much for winter. Summer there's tons of trout potholes you can flyfish. The NSR is awesome for pike/goldeye/walleye on the fly. Your also closer to grayling/bulltrout streams found up north in the Grande Cache area. Tons of great stuff out near nordegg/rocky mountain house.

i feel for you. look into hooking up with this club. i'm sure it would be a great way to meet other bug chuckers in the capital city and surrounding area. the access/boat storage @ spring is an awesome perk alone.

yep, I'm really sorry for your loss too, I moved to Eddy from Calgary 9 months ago, nothing up here compares.
Buy a float tube or pontoon, we have many potholes around. Going to be a while before we see any lake action around here.

I don't mind Edmonton for fly fishing.
It means just as short of a drive to the nordegg area for cutties.
Closer yet to swan hills for those amazing grayling.
Close to the Athabasca drainage.
I find the north sask drainage must less busy than the bow and oldman.
Access is also must easier.

I enjoy it up here actually. 3 hours to anywhere with quality fishing if you know where to look, also our area up here doesnt get the pressure or the crowds down south.
Its really not to bad, there are some real gems up here. Learn your stocking reports, give a quick search on the name of the water body of this forum, if it doesnt show up, chances are it will be a good time if you put the gas and effort it. If you're looking for fish the size similar to the bow nearby in our "lakes" you can PM me if you like! Happy to fill a fellow fly fisher in on our surrounding potholes!

There's a few stocked ponds around Edmonton that aren't more than 45 mins away at the most. I find them all good in the spring. They're nice for a quick trip after work if you're ancy or going through withdrawl.

can fly fish for goldeye in NSR. Best fly fishing is stocked lakes near edmonton. Usually they are west of the city~1hr. I hope you like rainbows. Chikakoo's got brook trout as well though. Muir I'd also recommend. You'll need a tube to access these two.
water boatmen, leaches, pheasant tails, hairs ears. That's what I'd use. Dry fly fishing is not as much. Chironomids are supposed to be good too. if you're north, try hermitage and if south try beaumont for small pond fishing.

There is a rainbow stocked pond in hermitage park. I've never seen anyone pull anything out myself but people claim to.
Do you catch those on the fly or sink a worm?

My sympathies when compared to Calgary but there are bright spots. In addition to the previous suggestions, pike on the long rod can be a blast.
