Neither is registration... But its a start, and there wouldnt be any fees.

I say treat them like a bear bait site , valid win card number which can be traced to you , name number .

Shack burning & stealing, er I mean claiming.
Any of you have a shack, I bet less than 5%.
Some of us spend a lot of time and care into our shacks. I actually leave mine open for anyone to use. But touch my shack and you have a problem come next season. If the fish cops are too "busy" to look after the few who leave them out, let the town come up with a cure. The town cant protect my shack and the many ppl on the lake, I dont think they could solve this problem.

No registration. No permit. No fees.
Just a requirement to have either your fishing license or win # clearly shown on the outside. No number, shack is either seized or if anyone is found inside, ticketed.

I'll Vote for the fish license # Win # is a little too much personal info.
There needs to be something to control the problem.

This issue gets discussed every year. In Ontario I used to register mine every year and the number that you were given had to be prominently displayed on the front of your shack. If it wasn't there you'd get a notice on your shack and eventually the shack would be removed. There was a drop dead date to have your shack off the ice and after that they would remove it and send you the bill. We got our #'s at the F&W office from one of the civilian clerks working there so it didn't tie up an Officer. Using a similar system in Alberta was discussed using win #'s instead of issuing #'s.
IIRC.....Last year the AFGA put forward a resolution to SRD for the registration of ice shacks that was accepted.
Can anyone confirm that? What ever happened with that.....has it not been implemented yet?

You do realize that Your fishing licence has your name, address, phone number, win card number, M/F, Birthdate, Drivers licence number on it.
All the personal info that is on your win and then some
Registration would just have a number. That info would be available only to LE and SRD.

I really fail to see the conspiracy and/or imminent danger of posting your win card number on your shack so SRD, RCMP or whomever can quickly look up or call in to get the rest of your detailed information, should they need to contact you;
1) To ask you to remove it
2) To report vandalism
etc...
Your Name, Phone number etc.... could be optional info IF a selected third party, like the AFGA, administered this program .....
I am not worried about the liberals learning that I have a shack out on this ice ......
As a matter of fact I don't think the liberal give a rats @$$ about your fishing shack either.
A program like this has very little down side from my perspective.

Let the owners of the shacks decide whats best. Personally I hate the idea of MORE govt involvement in my fishing practices.

I buy a registration card every year... it's called a fishing liceance why couldn't you just use that and if they really wanted to they could add a check box for if you have an ice shack. I would be fine with leaving my licence number or win number on my shack, in Saskatchewan you have to leave your name, address and phone number on you shack in big writing. I haven’t heard of people having problems with identity theft cause of it.
I don't think it is a big enough problem we need another government program for it. Even with a registration card if you didn't want to take your shack off you could just take the registration card with you the last time you’re there and you wouldn't get a ticket. Any system isn't perfect and if someone wants to leave it and not get a ticket they will figure something out.

ice shack
lake Simcoe 35 years ago you had to register your hut and paint the numbers above the door it was no big deal the Wardens office was the place to go and the rules were explained at that time , i think it cost 15 dollars . We had three huts on the lake amongst 2500 other huts just in that one area , our big hut we spent the night and could spend the weekend , it was our 3 month cottage but March 15 huts off the lake or else! You were contacted and warned and then they were removed by a combination of resident volunteers and Game Wardens ,blocks frozen in are removed and the area policed up etc. they sometimes use choppers to fly them ashore zero tolerance and they also know where to send the bill and the fine , works for me , lets keep our few lakes clean and free of debris, 4x4,s and firewood play hell on outboard drives cheers

Fishing Licences and WIN's would not necessarily be good choices as you do not require either one to fish in Alberta. Many of our juniors and Seniors fish without them so some other ID would be better in my estimate.
