Default Aussie from Edson

Hi peoples, I noticed you don't do introduction threads around here but figured I'd throw one up anyway.
I'm new to Canada, we arrived 2 weeks ago (from Australia) during the snowstorm.
I'm still trying very hard to get my head around the fishing here - we did a little ice fishing last week with a local - but the open water fishing has me stumped.
My preference is to fish lures from a kayak.
I am also definately doing some hunting while here (2 years) as it's one of the main reasons we chose to come to Canada.
So if I say the wrong thing, it's probably cultural (although I'm pretty blunt sometimes as well).
Any advice on places to fish around Edson would be appreciated and I'm always up for meeting axe wielding homocidal maniacs from internet forums.

There is a thread rolling around here from a few years back.
I'll just say this now, don't let any fellow coworkers get your cell phone.

It was a classic thread.

Greetings! Welcome to Canada!!!

Have your fingerprints grown back yet?

(Vietnamese refugees came here, from 99% humidity and 30 degrees to -40 and their fingerprints peeled off)

If you get a chance, head to Silver Summit and get some late season skiing in, it is close to you and always fun.

Welcome aboard the Crazy Train! I am your neighbour...sort of....lol. We live out in the bush N.E. of your poor, poverty stricken little town.

Hope you enjoy your stay in Candahoovia and recover from your shocking introduction to the local weather. Stay prepared....more shocks yet to come!

(heh...heh...heh...wait til he experiences the May Long....lol)

Tons of hunting and fishing in the region. Take a visit to Ron's Outdoor and they have some information on the local lakes plus it is a good place to strike up a conversation with local sportsmen...hunting or fishing.

Perhaps we will meet up some day, share a brew and a Bar-B.
Regards,
Dave.

G'day and welcome to AO.
I'd be keen to meet up for a shoot in summer if you're wanting to bag some gopher. Always a good time. Born in NZ, lived there for 15 years, moved to Oz for 10, now live here in Edmonton.

Hey Junglefisher, I don't know if you have Mosquitos in Oz, but if not, you're in for a real treat this summer! Welcome to Alberta.

Z : We do have mozzies, out where we lived recently we would get plagues of them following heavy rain events. It's nice to not have them all year here at least.

Pesky : I don't have lucky camo thongs. Should I be worried?

47: Sounds fun. Are gopher used for anything or just pest reduction?

Dave : Have been to Ron's a couple of times. They seem pretty helpful there. Lucky you living out bush (we come from 320 acres that is 45 minutes from our nearest town of 900 people) but as we are here for only 2 years, we'll have to put up with a town rental.

Ken : We haven't found it to be too bad apart from chapped lips. Where we are from is not particularly humid.

Daco : I'll keep that in mind.

CB : Thanks.

Zip : Looking forward to it.

DK : Sounds good.

I also forgot to mention earlier that here in Alberta we have a different level of axe wielding homocidal maniacs. Here the BRAND of your axe matters GREATLY!

Sort of comparable to wearing Calvin Klein underwear or driving a Jaguar car.

It would be considered very gauche' and tasteless to show up for an axe murdering with anything less than a Gransfors Bruks or a Wetterlings. The very LEAST any self respecting society axe murderer should ever be caught in public with is an Estwing.

Any brand less than these would relegate an Alberta axe wielding homicidal maniac to nothing more than an out of work zombie level murderer.
Regards,
Dave.

Welcome to Alberta.

If you got a 4x4, head down the Emerson lake road, north of edson on hwy 748 about 17km, then left at the Y. Or maybe its 17km past end of pavement, can't remember been a few years since I've been down there. Lots of good trout fishing. If the weather is nice and roads are dry you could use a car.

And just a heads up, never trust anyone driving a black dodge dually lol

I kinda like my Estwing, kinda feels like "roughing it" even in the middle of a bloody mess.

I live not far from you in the stinky town of Hinton. It's stinky, yea , but is our stink.

I am still on the hunt for out of the way trout creeks but I will say since moving here last August I now know what heaven looks like for hunters.

Contact our fellow AO member Mcleod.

He is "rather knowledgable" of your area.

Oh, and welcome too.

That's quite funny, I was just doing a google search on the McLeod river and it showed up a thread from last year with input from "McLeod".
