Who to use as a reference for PAL.
I want to get to get my PAL in order to get a .22 hunting rifle, but since I'm new here who can I use as a reference? Back in England I had to use two references who were "upstanding citizens" and had known me for 4 years or more. I don't know any Canadians apart from my partner and I doubt she could be a reference?

Seems quite a bit of hassle for me. I'll just stick to bow from now on in. Might be a flintlock shotgun if I can find one for a good price!

Well I'm a non-resident alien and I have no idea how to get two references in Canada. I can't even work until December.

I read that you can't,plus they might be unsure about giving a non-resident alien a PAL. Wish my UK one was valid over here!

Seems a major ball ache as I'll need to get loads of forms sent to England and then back again. Lots of effort for a .22 rimfire.

I would imagine.. You are a non-resident and can't even work here yet. I'm not sure why the government would grant a firearms license to someone who is not a legal resident of the country. How long have you been here? Are you on a student visa? Are you just a tourist?
On the other hand, if you aren't a Canadian resident, why couldn't you use your british license? When people come from out of country to hunt they don't have to get a PAL. Wonder how they buy ammo here though.... hmmm.

Shouldnt be any different from UK
Friend of mine moved here from Ohio and had his within 4-6 months of arriving. Sure he didn't know any Canadians when he first moved here so they have to take out of country references if you just got here.

If you phone the CFO there is a recording that says non residents can either fill out a form to bring firearms into the country or apply for a pal. So I don't think it should be a problem for a non resident to get a firearms license.

You can use a UK reference, had a friend that recently moved to Canada from Greece, he used a local reference but was denied because he didn't know them for the required amount of years.
When it was time to contact the references, he provided them with the RCMP contact number and application number, and they called in and conducted the interview. Was for PAL/RPAL.
