snare cable size
I imagine this question probably has been covered before but I'm wondering what size cable you guys like for coyotes and wolves. Im thinking of putting an order in to the snareshop and need to know if one size cable will work nicely for both animals. I was thinking of 3/32 7x7 with cam lock and breakaway. i've also heard that 5/64 1x19 doesn't get chewed off as much. what do you guys like and why? this will be my first season snaring and i would appreciate all the tips i can get. Thanks!!

I go with the 5/64 1x19. 8 ft long Camlock with teeth.

do you recommend kill springs? i'd like to keep the set as simple and cheap as possible but still be as effective as possible

Yes, I use a 50# coil kill spring on every coyote and wolf snare. Kill springs are not needed on cat snares.

Are those for your wolves? I would think they would be perfect for that as well as yotes

What's the advantage to having a longer, 10 ft snare, as opposed to a shorter one with an extension?

Not much but I found extensions a pain in the butt and at the snareshop they actually gave me some added length for free so why not. Got 2 extra feet out of the deal

My thinking is that a snare is a one time use item while an extension with a swivel could be re-used numerous times. Wouldn't going with a shorter snare with an extension cost less in the long run?
I'm just snaring coyote/fox so snaring wolves might be a whole different ballgame and there's a legitimate reason, other than the noose size, that I don't know about for wanting a longer snare.

I run 5/64 1x19 5 foot replacement snares on a 7 foot extension with swivel,12 foot of running room to hit the end and lock in place and trigger the spring, one yote stretched out, this is what works for me IMO,and my extension is 3/32 holds up pretty good, after catch cut snare off and replace with new, ready to go.

I am also the same set up only thing is I am using 1/16 1x19 cable locks spring trigger system with 3/32 ext and swivel. Same length. I am down on the prairies it seem to work for me. I have caught yotes in 3/32 snares but I was setting for wolf.

do you guys ever use 1/16 for wolves? seems like that would be a bit small. i was thinking 5/64 1x19 would work well for both wolves and yotes. just trying to keep it simple and buy one size wire.

Just for info, the Trappers manual recommends the following sized cable:
Wolf - 3/32"
Coyote - 5/64" or 3/32"
Fox, Lynx, Bobcat - 1/16"
I was told that the 5/64" cable would hold a better loop so I went that route.
This thread popped up at the right time! I'm headed to Halford's this afternoon to pick up cable, etc to make my extensions. Going with 3/32" cable for them.

It's not the size of cable, it's the 1X19 type rather than 7X7 that holds the better loop, especially for large loops.

I prefer micro locks as they have no moving parts to freeze up. The Amberg and toothed Cam locks are also very effective locks.

I like Micro but never used them. I started with toothed Camlocks and wanted to keep them all the same. They work real well and are black coloured to hide easier as well.

thanks peter! i;ve heard nothing but good things about marty's snare parts and he definitely has the catch numbers to prove it.
micro locks do seem like a simpler way to lock a snare. i'll have to try them out
