Most lakes stay open to my knowledge, it is mainly the streams out west that close Nov 1st.

Pigeon Lake is for sure open anyways.

I was looking in the regulations (2014) for the lakes that I like to fish here's my findings:

-- pigeon lake closed from: 04/17/14 to 05/14/14

-- gull lake closed from: 04/01/14 to 05/14/14
11/01/14 to 12/10/14

-- sylvan lake closed from: 04/01/14 to 05/14/14
11/01/14 to 12/10/14

-- buck lake closed from: 04/01/14 to 05/14/14

-- battle lake closed from: 04/01/14 to 05/14/14

-- wabamun lake closed from: 04/01/14 to 05/14/14
(special rules for fishing from 10/01/14 to
11/30/14, special hook sizes and only dawn to
dusk)

-- lac ste anne closed from: 04/01/14 to 05/14/14

So this is my list, and hard water fishing isn't here yet, so there is still time for open water ............... cheers doyle

Can't say I am surprised but it is just strange if that is the reason why they would only protect Gull and Sylvan.

It's for pickerel spawning. Battle does close. ... SRD doesn't close it for whitefish they breed like rabbits..... it'd April 1- may 15 ... prime pickerel spawning time. Pike also spawn in spring....

I am talking about Sylvan and Gull closing Nov 1 to Dec 10. I can only think of 2 reasons, a) whitefish spawn or b) thin ice. Neither seem to make a whole lot of sense though since they don't do it for other similar lakes.

I think its a little of both, Spawning as well as Safety. Can you imagine how many dumb -------s would be driving on some of the lakes, pulling there 1000 lb shack to get set up for the winter when there is only 2" of ice. No such thing as common sense anymore.
