Default Choosing a rangefinder

I'm looking into buying myself a rangefinder and would like to be able to range out to around 700 yards. I was out hunting last weekend and tried a buddy's rangefinder on some deer down a cutline. He has the vortex ranger 1000. My guess is that they were 500-700 yards away but his ranger finder wouldn't read them or near them at all. I got a reading on the ground at 325, quite a bit closer than the deer, but that's about it. Poor rangefinder? Does snow affect readings? Does it need warranty work? Should I get a better quality finder? Or am I out to lunch trying to find something that reads well at those distances?

Most people with leica seem to like them......me included.

I ranged a cow elk last week against snow at 627 yards.

This is a good read, getting a bit dated but still some options for you.

Leica, Zeiss, or Swarovski. You get what you pay for.

Pay attention to the MINIMUM distance they read as well....the Leica are 10 yards the SWARO bino/rangefinder is 50yards I believe, if you bow hunt that's no good.

i was doing the exercise last summer... i was between leica and zeiss... swaro was a bit over my budget...
i ended up with the zeiss... but i wouldn't go for anything other than those 3 brands...
go see them, try them and get the feel... provided all range well to your expectations, the zeiss is much bigger than the leica, heavier, but has higher magnification for example...
don't know... there are other variables that would boil down to personal preference.

good luck..

Leica. A Leica 1000 will actually range a 1000 yards consitantly.

If you buy some Leica hd-b geovids you will never want a better range finder nor binoculars. Do it once, do it right!
