Default Environmental Pig in action on Sylvan Lake

With my daughter home from college we thought we would take a drive over to Sylvan lake to see if we should make this coming Saturday a fishing day, we were disgusted to see the mess that was deposited just off shore on the north end of the lake where RR23 (Palm Bay road) enters. I would really like to see this filthy S.O.B. clean up his own mess but what's the chances of that.
I have asked a fellow A.O. member to help me with posting some pictures of what we found so you guys can be on the look out for any similar activity in the area.
It appears that the "PIG" in question used a chainsaw to cut up a bunch of trusses and possibly pallets and dump a gallon or two of used motor oil on the lot to get the blaze going. Needless to say the debris left over is full of nails and those razor sharp cleated plates that are used to hammer the trusses together along with a pool of unburnt oil.
Myself, many locals and tourists use this area in the summer to swim their dogs and let their kids splash about. Countless pleasure boats get launched here as well. I think the mess that has been left will end up in about 3-4 feet of water when the thaw comes, this is real bad news for any bare feet and boat trailers.
It is my intention to try to clean this up as best I can before it gets covered up with snow, the forecast looks fair for Saturday morning so I will be there at 10 AM with a shovel and pail along with a garbage bag or two, looks like a some of the nails etc are frozen in so I will hit them with the tiger torch and see if I can make any headway. If there is anyone who will be out that way with any of those fancy pads for soaking up oil I sure wouldn't mind a few. I hope we can get some of the pictures posted up soon so you can see what's been going on. Best Regards David Henry.

Default Pads

Thanks there is a pool of oil that I would just end up chasing around with the shovel, so those pads will sure help. Nice of you to offer a hand I don't think the clean up job will take to long. David.

Default Magnet

Thanks for the suggestion on the magnet but I don't have a nail picker up thing, we should manage anyway. Good news is that my picture posting friend is going to get some photos up soon so we can be on the look out for similar behavior on these easy access points onto the lake.
If any of you guys happen to see people burning construction materials on any of the lakes please have the presence of mind to take a plate number or at least kick em in the nuts. D.H.

Unfortunately this kind of thing seems common around here. We've had nothing but problems with thieves, vandals etc at work in the area between Sylvan and Lacombe. For the longest time someone was dumping used clothing (likely stolen from drop box) all over the countryside. Lots of theft and property damage by work also.

Good for you guys for the clean up. If we could only prevent this sort of thing before it happens. Sometimes, a confrontation with these slobs is the only way.

Lets ask the kids that tried to burn down shacks, destroyed shanties and robbed ice huts, if they know who would do this!

Anybody contact Sylvan Fire Dept or Alberta Environment (or whatever it's called )?

They might have the equipment and expertise to deal with these situations.

Good on everyone who's volunteering to help out.

Might be worth a call to Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resources.
I don't know enough about it. Or I'd make the call myself. But if this kind of stuff is going on someone should be held accountable. Those pictures look disgusting. How can someone feel good about doing that? Seriously even the worst person out there has to have some sense of right and wrong.

Boggles my mind that someone would think its a good idea to burn stuff like that on a frozen lake. Good on you guys for cleaning it up before its at the bottom of the lake.

Default Environmental PIG in action

It appears that the "PIG" in question

Looks like a good old fashioned "PIG" roast is in order, if anyone can find this outstanding individual I would be happy to skewer that PIG score the flesh, add some marinade, stuff an apple in the mouth and slow roast that sucker!

Good on the volunteers for taking this into their own hands, its a great thing that some wonderful people are willing to clean up after this slob. disgusting and completely un called for behavior on the part of this waste of skin for leaving such a mess, Man I am some p/o'd after seeing those pictures!

Default Dec 20th clean-up!

Environmental Remediation Project Completed!

We under estimated the amount of time & effort that was required to clean-up this mess, nevertheless, we were done by noon today. We ran out of towels, David was going to try to find some oil absorbent rags/towels and return to soak up the remaining oil. I imagine he will update his tread accordingly.

This is what I did during the last 10 years of my career, our projects were all North of 60, in the high arctic, now retired and enjoying life in Sylvan. I was pleased to help keep our environment clean ... some pics from the jobsite.

I honestly feel like you guys are heros for doing this.

Well done, and I KNOW you didn't do it to get a pat on the back or recognition, you did it because you love your lake and your nature, and because you care about it. You are true caretakers of your environment, and something we should all strive to be.

Again - HUGE respect to all how helped clean that mess up.

A tip of my hat to all involved in cleaning up this mess. Fine example of giving a damn about our great outdoors.

Hopefully the person responsible gets caught sooner than later.

Thank you to the efforts of the reclaimers. Very sad to see that there are still such pigs in such an 'educated' society.

Not to take anything away from what the reclaimers have done, an excellent job, might I suggest one further remediation. Get the ice saws and ice pinchers out and actually remove the contaminated ice in blocks. Flag the area cut out for safety.

Put the ice on tarps with sawdust on shore somewhere. The ice will eventually melt and all contaminants will be contained on the tarps.

Back in the day, before refrigeration alot of block ice was taken from lakes and rivers. The older folks might have such ice tools. A chainsaw would work too but there may be contamination from the chain oil unless vegetable oil is used.
