Burbot Spawn On
So a buddy and I went out this afternoon to see if the Burbot bite has started yet around Edm. Gorgeous warm sunny day on the lake. Started slow but once it started getting dark very steady action. Both of us limited out and lost quite a few near the hole, and we also released quite a few small ones. The spawn has started and there was a lot of spilt "milk" on the ice.
Big fish fry tomorrow.

Some good eats there! Congrats. Don't fillet them on your countertop, from experience it is not very wise this time of year

Nice haul. It is inspiring me to get out and stack some on the ice this weekend.

Well done ninja, those are some beauties! I have never caught more than two in one day before, must be fishing the wrong lakes.

How far outside Edm do you have to go for open season for Burbot?
Congrats on the nice catch.

Thanks guys. It kind of makes up for all the times a person goes out too early in season. Not trying to be a dick about saying where we were but if you study the regs. and the map you can see where Burbot fishing is legal within a 2-3 hour drive from Edm. A little homework can pay off. In answer to some of the PM's ....
..R.. Yes
..M.. different lake
..C.. Night fishing is great. Had a great northern light show and the kids can also have fun looking at the stars and searching for sattelites moving across the sky. Much easier if you all have headlamps on to check your line and a light source in tent and maybe a heater.

Glad to see you guys did well...we were out there about a week and a half ago and it was still a touch early. We have plans to go back this weekend, probably Sunday, so it's good to know that we should get into them.
Another fun one for the kids at night if it is clear out is a sky map app for your smart phone. It uses your gps and when you aim your phone at the sky it will show you what constellations you're looking at

First, damn nice mess o burbs! Good on ya!
Almost like code speak.
Does anyone else do a double take and think "Now burbs are on the lake X list...."
Before I get jumped on for even mentioning this, I have no problem for anyone keeping any fishing on the low down. Get out there and find them...it is really not hard and is gratifying.
If this doesn't underscore the huge number of anglers to lake ratio that AB has....I don't know what will...

I was out with the Ninja last nite Just finished filleting my haul of burbots ( Ninja's pics are just his catch. Based on amount of milt and eggs still in those I just cleaned up spawn is just about to start so next couple weeks should be awesome. WN didn't believe me at first but a tangerine colored jig tipped with a minnow works wonders.

Hey Ninja, the trick is to go help him bring the fish in when he catches it. Once it's up engrave his lure in your mind and then go for the jackpot! hahaha

I use a gold rattling rap with the front treble removed and a white twister tail jig on the back treble....that out fishes bait in my experience. In this pic the front treble was still on but I removed it an they were easier to release and they always bit the rubber body anyhow.

Cute little guys ! Spawn has been on gull the last week or two as well (catch and release) had to swap out the 6" hole to an 8" so we didn't have to stall and maneuver them up!

Just a tip burbs really degenerate in taste and freshness after frozen a lot of people suggest eating fresh caught and I agree. (A few studies just google) if you have to freeze don't leave the filets frozen for longer then a month thats when they really go down hill. (My experience and again google)

x2, i kept a few too many on one occasion and though edible after a month is was a complete waste. Even vacuum packing doesn't help, if anything it makes in worse...
Great fish though! Only a few feeds for us this year due to sketchy ice.
