moose draws 500 zones
did anyone get drawn for moose in the new archery/rifle moose draws in the 500 zones. I didn't get mine with a priority 3 in a high moose population 500 zone.
if you did get drawn, what priority were you?

Moose draw
I tried as well with a priority 3 and got a big zero. Last year my dad got a moose draw with a 2 year priority. I don't understand what's going on in these wmu 500 zones.

Poor Wildlife and Hunter Management
I said it on the other Moose thread. It's BOZO the clown & Co!
This is a group picture of the Clowns that now determine the Moose hunting draws and regulations. Maybe that will change next year, but I highly doubt it!

I am a little choked, because I didn't read the reg changes properly and was real planning on hunting a new area in 500's for moose with my bow and didn't realise it went to draw.
Oh well, lesson learned (again), and I still can try in 248.

I think what happens is,everybody looks at the draw summery report, finds a zone that say for example only needs a priority 3 for a certain animal, then figures its a slam dunk to get drawn.then when 3 times the amount of people apply, the priority level to get drawn goes up a few years more than the previous year.thats my theory

I expect it will grow every few years yet again, lots of people stack up points without really knowing what to do with them. Its more like shopping now. A p2 unit will be a p5 in no time. IMO If it was all on lottery it would completely change the dynamics on how people put in draws. The most popular zones and close to the big citys would still be a long wait unless you have horseshoes, but in the less than popular zones you would see joe hunter getting drawn more often. Just look at all the threads of people asking for help on areas they have never been.... Shopping. Public forum info sharing is also creating spikes in how many apply to these zones.IMO Hits and tips should be done by PM.

I don't now about the other wmu's. But two years ago I drawn for bull on pri 2 for 501. Last year there were seven moose poached that I know of and two of which were bulls and only the racks were taken so the population has taken a beating the last couple of years I reckon that may also be a contributing factor to the lack of tags

It will be interesting to see what happens. Most of my bow hunting friends would buy a general moose tag "just in case" with no real plans of chasing them specifically. Now these same guys will all apply, and be sure to tag out when drawn.

Got it with P5 in 509. I spend a lot of time in the north half of the zone and in the last 8 years I have been hunting there has certainly been a decline in moose population. So I for one, am all for the draw. Plus it will have the added benefit of cutting down on the number of guys driving around in SxS with there bows at 9:00 in the morning. Just my opinion.

I just witnessed tonight, a bull moose go thru a windshield of a small suv, the lady passenger is messed up really bad, I hope she lives. I can only imagine this is going to become a much more common occurrence, at least until it kills on of the so called biologists wife/child/parent, maybe then the political agenda will get set back a notch so wildlife management can take place.

P1 Bull
I got lucky? and got drawn for Antlered Moose in wmu 532 with a P1. I might be hunting solo as it's a long drive to Fort Smith. I might charter out to avoid the local hunters. I could use a partner for the hunt but not 20.
I lived in Fort Smith in 2006. It's a full service town, good food store, reasonable hotel, above average beer store and really good air service.

Put it on a separate draw for archery (Sept & Oct) and rifle (Nov).
Guys I know that got drawn used high priority points knowing the archery season was coming to a draw.

absolutely I agree! Set it up similar to the antelope.
trophy and archery are separate, as well as non trophy/female
do a cow draw, archery bull draw and november rifle draw.
I honestly assumed that was the plan, I was sick when I saw them grouped together. 4 year wait to hunt a moose with a bow. Stupid.
especially in the 3 500 zones I hunted in 2014. all carried excellent moose populations.
Idiots making decisions again without engaging the appropriate stakeholders.

I agree Brock, even better:
Archery for Sept, crossbow/muzzleloader for Oct, rifle or any weapon for Nov.
They will make more $ on all these extra application fees, and us hunters have more choices and more enjoyable hunt.

Confirmed 100% that calf moose ARE on DRAW in 505,510.
The draw booklet, and DOWNLOADED .pdf reflect the correct conditions.
If you go to the main Regulations Home page and scroll down to the 500 Series, the displayed page is WRONG.

Confirmed by who?
These synopses are NOT legal documents. The Wildlife Act and Wildlife Regulations are.
According to the 2015 Wildlife Regulations, Table 1E, Boreal WMUs 500 Series and 841 Big Game Seasons, WMU 505 and 510 are under a General archery season for Calf only Moose from Sept. 1- Oct. 30.
https://www.canlii.org/en/ab/laws/re...-143-1997.html
Now there was a Draw special licence application held for this season, but the OFFICIAL regulations state that it is open under a General licence. Someone is going to be scrambling to try and fix this before the judge says "Nope, he was hunting in a legal general season".
