22, 12ga, and 7.62x54R. 30-06 equivalent but with cheap rounds available for targets and whatnot. My pockets would be empty if 30-06 was my only centerfire, I shoot 1000+rounds per year

For most of the years when my kids were kids I had a 12 gauge Wingmaster, a 22lr and a 270 model 70. It covered all I hunted nicely and after several years of trying others I am just about where I started! The interm was fun, but not necessarily really productive!

Well close enough.

.22, 12gauge & .308

Now any future purchases will be gravy and next will likely be a bow.

Default Jack

I never owned a .30/06. Tried one and didn't like it much. That said, I have many larger and smaller calibers and most all kinds of actions. I wish I had stopped at three ....

I do enjoy his writings.

I started my shooting adventures with a .177 air gun of unknown make, then on to a FN single shot and then a .303 jungle carbine. Those were the starting days, after that, I've forgotten. Jack O'Connor with all due respect to the man never did shape my choices, nor did anyone else. I've picked my calibers and firearms based on my preferences and choices and whatever stoked my interests at the time.

So my question is does anyone just have one .22, one shotgun and one centre fire rifle? I have more than the basic three.
Well. I have all three plus a couple of extras. I don't count them cause then I can truthfully answer "I don't know" when yes dear asks just how many of those things do you have?

Ha! Well CSIS knows where to find me... As for the "lever"; I'm one of the only guys who sees a lever as being "tactical" and one of the only things that makes me unique in this tactical everything climate. Oh, and my being a low speed, high drag operator...

As for Jack's admitted admiration, or at least respect for the 30-06, I would have to agree, probably since I've been about 12. All the greatest cartridges have a very similar dimension, and enjoy a very good balance between bullet weight and velocity. To boot it enjoys an availability of bullets with very good sectional density and ballistic coefficients.

The problem with having too many guns is having to get the ammo for every one you have. I've simplified my collection down to four. The only one jack was missing was the Daniels

Started out with a Cooey Model 60 .22 rifle, Cooey 12 ga. Model 84 and a Lee Enfield No. 1 Mark III* but that was more than 50 years ago.

There have been a few firearms come and go since then.

Still have a 30-06 Ruger 77, tang safety that could serve for any N. American game.
The .22 has been upgraded to a custom Winchester Model 52B sporting rifle.
And the shotgun, oh .....there a quite a few choices.

First 3 were a .22 single shot cooey, .16 gauge pump, and a .303 British. Grandpas guns. That old .303 had groupings the size of a big screen t.v at 100 yards.

I've had lots of rifles over the years, everything from .222 up to a .416 Rigby. Somehow, I've never owned a .30-06. Probably won't now, I've pared it down to a .22-250 (Win 70), a 7mm-08, 7 mm RM, and a .300 WM (all Model 700s). I pretty much only shoot two of those. Anyway, Jack was smart, but you could have substituted a .308, or 7mm RM, or .270 in there and it would have been as effective for his list.

My hunting rifle is 30-06.

I've had many other calibres. They were great too.

This 30-06 is very light. 6 3/4 lbs with a Leupold 3x9 and one round in it.

That's why I like it. If it were a 300 win, I'd still like it. Or a 308, or a 7 mm rem mag.......it just happens to be a 30-06.

I dont have a .22 or 12 g though.
