Ice has started in the higher mountain lakes. As of last sunday, there were very few open patches on the lake that I have been eyeing. The open spots were only 20-30 feet in diameter and will be closed up by now.

Ghost, Bearspaw, Seebe were still wide open on the weekend with at least 1 boat on Ghost that I spotted.

Upper Bow has not even started forming ice along the edges yet so it should be a couple weeks until we have any ice down here along the riverside.

A fellow I know told me he stopped at Obed lake this morning, Friday nov 6th, and the lake was frozen over. He didn't say how thick it was. Probably only an inch or 2.

First snow fall of the season has me itching to get all my mods done to my flip over and get all my new gear ordered. Received. And rigged up before first ice. I will be ordering my new rods and tackle tomorrow after work and heading out to the store to pick up a couple more rod holder bases and cup holders for the hut.

Hopefully myself and my buddies can spend a ton of time chasing giant walleyes again this winter and maybe a few jumbo perch trips.

Unless we get some -30 soon we won't be ice fishing till the end of Dec. / early Jan. Wow ! Warm fall we have. Some people have been ice fishing in late Nov. in past years but I don't think so this year. Last year I was out early to mid Dec and the ice was over 8"
End of Dec. was driving on last year. Don't think so this year.
Maybe my small trout pond will have November ice for walking on.

No worries. Keep your eye on central Alberta - Gull - Sylvan. Looks to be more than cold enough to get out there on opening weekend. And with little snow so far, we could see some good ice.

Lake Bonavista is half frozen over already, won't be too long for some of the nearby lakes to start.

Lake O'Hara is frozen, as well as wapta lake. The bow has a good amount of ice flowing down it near lake Louise

I'm kind of surprised you guys didn't put up an ice hole sticky thing ?

I would.

I was thinking like an annual sporting event.
Ice on.

JK, really I do look forward to reading about you all getting ready, setting
out for ice fishing fishing in AB.

And seeing the rewards for your work at your hobbies and passions as I do mine.
Pike as long as your arm, Walleyes fat as a drum and low and behold ...

Who will land the biggest perch this year ?

3.5lbs ? 4+ lbs ?

Break a record ?

Been following your posts for the last 3 or 4 years now, hoping you all have
a safe and bountiful fun filled winter this year.

Best of luck and happy holidays to you all.
Bones.

Thanks Zip! Keep the updates coming.

I was going to drive by Sylvan today but stuck to highway 2 instead. All the ponds along the highway have a layer of ice and skiff of snow on them. Until...I got to Carstairs and South of there where the temperature quickly rose from 1 degree to 13! Good ole Chinook wind.

Colder temps are coming this week to Central.

I took a little trip out this morning to Jackfish lake to my surprize a good thin crust of ice about 1/8" thick as far out as you could cast and around cabin it was a little better but still very close to crusting all around as was Mink. Mink was well on its way. Never went to Star to see what it looked like, instead heading up to nsr to give it a shot near the bridge and around the bend. Water was gorgeous clear and low. Last hour started noticing thin rectangle shaped ice sheets floating past me. Great to get out one more time to the river before ice fishing season consumes me

This may sound a little crazy but I'm serious here,
does there happen to be a radio station in AB that you all
tune into while your out on the ice ?

Down here on the coast anyway they all tune in to various weather
and/or local stations. Some local stations work like a community service
as well as provide music, news, water and weather, fish catch reports info etc.

Do you all have anything like that ?

I'm about 100 miles from the coast so I only have 1 station WFLO that is
like that, you can still call into the station to report a lost or found dog,
a 1972 monte carlo for sale or ask "how's the roads on 501 ?".
Most stations today are prerecorded/syndicated and you can't talk to anyone,
nobody's really there.

Just wondering if you have the old time radio stations up there?

Default Ice, Ice, where are you???

Have a place at Pine Lake and it was completely opened last weekend. No ice anywhere! Even all the water holes in the fields are mostly open. Hoping for frost soon, gotta get out there by end on December!!

Last year I read the posts and understood the companionship
threw out the season.

This year I am reading the posts and understanding the friendship
of seasoned ice fishers freely passing on knowlage to new comers.

I see that.

It's a very good thing.

And I can tell by the posts of those who don't know.
They too, just like me, have a lot to learn.
