Default 2012 Ram Reviews

Young fellow is looking at the 1500 quad cab with the 5.7 litre Hemi 4x4.

Any owners like to share their thoughts???

Yeh I have some thoughts. Isn't that one of the ones that are being bought back in the USA for being death traps.

Funny how Canada can just ignore it though.

Thanks, apparently there is a fix but also the option to sell it back??

Canada seems to be fixing rather than replacing.

I have the 2014 model. great gas mileage and a nice truck all round. Downright snappy if you need to pass someone.

What is it they are fixing? I have a 2012 2500 and have heard nothing about it

If it's serious enough to warrant a buy back I'd avoid that model of truck for the affected years like the plague.
My friend had that exact truck. Terrible on fuel compared to other similar trucks. He got 16l per 100km best case. My ford was at 11L/100km.
The bumper started to rust in a few weeks. They never fixed it.

I considered buying one when I was shopping for trucks in 2011 and it didn't lead the pack in any area I could see.

First I heard as well. Looks like a steering issue of some type and fairly serious.

Apparently, due to mishandling of the recall, a buy back program was implemented with some pressure from the courts. It only applies to those not fixed under warranty.

Again, I am just learning this from Google so take it for what it is. It seems this is a US buy back program only.

Have one, its been great only issue is it burns out headlight bulbs fast. A known issue I guess. And yes there is a recall on them but got mined fixed although never was an issue. Was thinking of a new truck, but this one is paid off and don't wanna spend the money ha

Great truck. Use one for work and it is by far the best 1/2 ton I've driven on a regular basis. I've got a 2012 slt pretty basic with the hemi. No recall on the one I have as far as I have learned. Not all were under recall.

Great on fuel. Considering I'm under a load at all times and still tons of jam. Tranny is fantastic. The only thing I've been considering doing is adding air bags cause I'm hard I the rear springs.

I do not have any desire to upgrade as it maybe the perfect year of this generation imo. That and I don't want to shift with a nob on the dash.

Oh yes. Headlights. I changed them out just recently. The bulbs were dim. Put in the second best sylvanias from crappy tire and good to go. Nice and bright for $50. I would expect that I'll be doing it again in another 3 yrs.

That recall is for 2500's and up only and does not include 1500's. The recall is for the left outer tie rod ends breaking and interesting how things get blown out of proportion cause tie rods only break in extreme conditions and 90 degree turns.

Nope. Includes 1500 too.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe...service=mobile

Bearing in mind the other massive safety issues that have killed lots of people that didn't result in a buy back, I'd be very wary of buying a vehicle that was deemed bad enough for one. Especially after they have tried and failed to fix the issue multiple times.

Especially when there are plenty of other good choices of similar vehicles.

I know a few friends with ram trucks who are annoyed as this issue has lowered their resale value already.

Ok so the only 1500's that are involved are mega cabs which are on a 2500 frame and front end.

Did you read the link? 1500 from 2009 to 2012 AND mega cabs from 2008.

I have a 2011 Dodge 1500 (bought it new) and if I had a chance to do it over, I'd look elsewhere.

Got really turned off when I blew a tranny at 50,000km.
(And then I had truck problems HEY-OH!)
Every thing about the truck just feels really cheap. But, to be fair, it was the cheapest truck available at the time. Things like the chrome bumper rust (which was mentioned earlier). The bolts on the chrome bumper are raw iron, not chromed heads, so they start rusting immediately, and it spreads to the chrome bumper. Actually, that bumper got mangled when someone pulled me out of a snowbank, and the cheap, non-dodge "jobber" replacement bumper has a finish at least twice as nice as the stock one.
I don't have much scientific evidence of why its a lesser truck than the alternatives. It just never seemed great.
But I have never been wanting for more power than what the 5.7 Hemi supplies.

X2. Had a few over the years and the 2012 I got now is an awesome truck. I've put a little over 150K km on it, lots of them hard ones, and haven't had a single issue. I'll be hanging on to this one until it completely craters.

The only complaint I have with mine is the headlights, stock lights are dim compared to everything else on the road. That's a pretty easy fix though.

Interesting how things get blown out of proportion, when someone doesn't have all the correct info, have to give they're opinion anyway,

I have a 2012 Sport, the 6 speed computer controlled tranny did give me a few shifting issues in extreme cold a couple of times. Other than that, it's been good. Mileage is 13l/100 on average at 120kmh. The power is great, the ride is the best.

Yup, forgot to mention that....factory headlights are brutally dim, but like you said easy and cheap fix.

My 12 1500 SLT Quad cab is an excellent truck. I have a large family, wife and 4 kids and the interior room was bigger then the Silverado (traded it in for the 1500) but slightly smaller than the F150. The only concerns I have are as mentioned the dim stock headlights, and the other, I found that in cold weather no matter how long it was plugged in and warmed up it always seemed to take forever to shift through the gears particularly the closely geared 2nd and 3rd. It revs high IMO when cold, however, after been driven for awhile, no issues.
