Just watched first 30 min. of video, and all I can say is WOW. This is seriously hard core Coyote trapping. Ryan is either trapping or preparing to trap all year round. Look foreward to seeing last 1/2 of vid.

Great video Ryan ! But I just cant bring myself to get THAT involved in catching those stinking things!. Being alone it turns out to be more of a job than anything else! But I have to give him the credit!

I can't believe the amount of mangy ones that were tossed. I would be ticked. Good haul Ryan and glad to see you got at it this year. Your daughters are doing great as well.
I find it interesting that he is only using 6-10 snares per bait. I know it costs a pile for all those rams but it looks like there are a ton of tracks at the baits and coyotes not getting caught. I wonder if he double or tripled the snares if he would find that his catch would dramatically go up and his bait would last longer?
Hope he goes for 1000 next year

I would think no doubt he would catch more. He said he was only averaging 10 coyotes a bait over two months. Im disappointed if I wasn't getting twenty at a bait in two months and I know that's the same for you. Maybe he could catch just as many and run less baits with more snares. Would save on a lot of time, bait and gas.

keep in mind he was planning for double that many. hence the excessive amount of baits. judging by his previous posts if it was a better year weather wise he would have gotten damn close.

No I realize that and am in no way saying he dose not know what he's doing but, I do think the more traps out around a bait your going to get more catches. Pretty hard to cover a site with 6-8 snares.

Ryan pre-baits and then sets on the main trails that the coyotes make and use. That's the way that I do it as well (I actually followed what Ryan does) except that rather than have a set number of 10 snares at each site, I'll put as many out as there are main trails. I'm thinking that with the number of bait sites and total number of snares that he puts out, he has to be thinking about his catch rate. Without knowing how many bait sites that he had he might just as well have caught 20 coyotes at each bait site if he kept replacing snares after each catch. I caught 4 in one spot this year. Just sayin.

I agree . Run a few less baits at one time , set heavier on the ones you have out and shorten up between check times to minimize bird loss . Check out the number of refusals he was having in the video , not much said about it but easy to see from the tracks . A few more snares set could possibly catch some of those . I was also surprised by his " the sky is falling " attitude after the NAFA letter about poor quality coyotes in Jan . The letter merely summed up what the market has proven time after time , good stuff sells , bad stuff doesnt . The exchange rate more than made up for any shortfall in price . Dont get me wrong , I think he did really well , but I know after discussing this video with a few others , that I would have done things a little differently .

I know for me if I don't have 20+ snares at a bait There are too many holes and I won't catch them as fast. I find my bait dissapears faster when I don't catch them as well.
I think areas are different but I suspect his is close to what I have around Edmonton for Populations. I would think he could get 20+ yotes off a bait in a 2 month or so time frame. It would be intersting to see how it would work for him if he had more snares out. Maybe he will chime in here and hope he does.
I would say what he did was quite the opperation and he did awesome.
I would love to try and run a 2 month coyote snaring deal and see what I could get if I wasn't working and had enough land connections. That would be all out fun!!!

Well I finished the video, and really enjoyed it. Thought it was neat that even after catching 400+ yotes he would still get excited about the next one. Pity about the wasted ones. Wonder what his new idea about keeping birds off a catch will be. It's too bad that he is finding it diffucult to make enough money to continue trapping full time. It looks like he has a considerable amount of money invested in gear and equipement.
Also liked his little talk at the end of the video. Noticed he was wearing a Trappers Inc. ballcap. Where/how does a fellow get one of those?

Thanks for all the kind words guys. I'll try to answer a few of the questions that were brought up. First of all I never ever once will claim that I'm the best trapper out there. I know that there are a lot better guys out there. What separates me from the pack is the size of lines I run. Most normal guys have careers and obligations that don't allow them to run as big as I do. Also, every year I learn more and more.
The baits I run are about 2 miles apart and as such I know that I am feeding/catching the same coyotes at different baits. If I ran just a few baits, I would cherry pick the best spots and really set on them. I think it's because of this reason that my per bait catch is lower than some of you guys. Also, I always have great baits (20+ coyotes) and not so good baits. Every single bait I set has caught coyotes but there's always better spots than others. If I were to spread the baits out to 4 miles apart I'm certain that the per bait catch would increase but the mileage would double to do that. Each loop is already around 60 miles long and 120 mile loop would really get carried away. And many of those baits are placed in areas that most guys would never think to set on. They don't have that "wow, that's a great coyote spot". Some great spots have to be bypassed because of permission or closeness to houses. The great spots away from people always produce but I set every 2 miles and many spots aren't as great as they could be.
Setting more than 6-8 snares has never worked well for me. I laid the snares to a bunch of spots last year (12-18 snares) and never seen the catch increase. I find that 6-8 well placed snares seem to work best for me. That being said, I never tried it on a large scale area to really know for sure so I could be wrong. Remember I'm always learning.
Rich Mellon gave me the Trappers Inc hat and a hoodie for being on the show. He had some for sale but not sure if there's any left.
I really appreciate the fact that my line is of interest to anyone and always welcome the feedback. Thanks guys and see you in Pincher Creek in July

Great feedback Ryan! I hope you don't take any comments as negative. We are all your cheerleeders and just are trying to see if we can come up with ideas to help. You did great. Everyone has their system. Any plans for 1K next year?

Thanks for stopping in Ryan! I suspect there's more people interested in what you're doing than you realize. It's because you've posted some great info online and helped a bunch of new trappers. Thanks! (Ha and maybe because you're kind of ok at skinning coyotes.)

I know Ryan's videos taught me a lot of very useful information. Really helped me understand things better, even after 3 years I'm always watching his videos. If you see this Ryan, thank you a ton, really wouldn't know a lot of the stuff I know today if it wasn't for your videos. Still use them lots.

Exactly nube , everyone is different and has there system whether good bad or indifferent .. A guy that catches over 500 coyotes is definitely doing something right .

Awesome video Ryan. And an unreal season! I started watching your videos a few years ago when I was 14. They actually got me started in to putting up coyotes! I haven't had anyone to teach me step by step and that's where your videos saved my *****. Planning on getting my trapping license for next winter. Then get some baits out and nail some yotes!! Just been calling and shooting so I've only got 44 this year with 39 skinners. Thanks again for all your knowledge. Hopefully I run in to you at a rendezvous sometime!

Great job on the video, Ryan! You picked a tough year to go for 1000 coyotes and had a lot working against you. Plus 500 coyotes is quite the accomplishment. I hope that you're able to give it another go next season when, hopefully, we have a normal cold Canadian winter. Good luck!
