Default Owl Attack Pt.2

A lot of you looked at the thread about the small Owl that I rescued from some Magpies and Crows that wanted to do him in. I'd like to give a big tip of the hat to AO member Strix. He drove into Edm. to help me with this little fellow. Strix confirmed that this was an adult Saw Whet Owl. Strix then went on to record the Owl's vital statistics for future reference. First he banded the owl. He then weighed the owl by placing him headfirst into a can like container so he stayed calm and could'nt fly away. Strix then took some measurements of wingspan, tail and other body parts. It was pretty neat how he used a Black Light apparatus to determine age of Owl. All in all it was a very educational experiance for myself and a bunch of the neighbours who came over to watch. Strix really knows his stuff when it comes to Owls and other birds. When all the vital stats were finished with we set the owl on a high branch where he sat for awhile so everyone could say goodbye and get some final pics, and then he took flight to freedom. I wonder what he thought about his time in captivity, and the indignities he went through being weighed and measured.
Once again thanks to Strix for taking the time to see that this little fellow was released properly, and for the extremely informative and entertaining evening.

Really cool story. I would much rather deal with animals than people. Double entendre.

Great story...really.
Wasn't a huge bird fan till this past year. Last Christmas my 12 year old wanted a cockatiel for Christmas (which he got).
An absolutely delightful little animal, with lots of character.
Can already 'whistle' the first fee bars of 'When the saints come marching in'.
Neither the dog nor cat can do that 😏

All good. Interesting....One guy rescues an owl from certain death by beaking and then connects with the right guy to handle the owl on a forum in cyber space. The AO forums work in wonderous ways.

Kudos to both Waterninja and Strix on a good release.

Waterninja... How do you feel about altering so many creatures' life paths profoundly? The owl got a second life and the neighborhood magpie and crow nestlings didn't get to eat that day. haha And now the owl has to explain to his mate where he was for a day and why he is wearing jewelry.

Now every time the crows chase the owl he's gonna come to your house.

Like it was suggested in Owl Attack Pt. 1 ... your mom may be connected to the owl. Now when you encounter an owl you will think of your mom. The owl is your guide. If you see an owl when hunting you will have a good hunt.

I had an odd encounter with a large prairie longtailed weasel the day after my father passed. Since then when I see a weasel I think of Dad.

To tell you the truth, I have finally found a solution to the magpie and crow problem around here. I don't like killing them (even after trapping them in a Magpie trap). I have found out however (don't ask), that once a Magpie or crow has been shot in the ass by a pellet gun they are intelligent enough to stay away in the future.
Pest free without killing them. Something for others to consider.
