Default 7MMSTW Experience anyone??

Hey Guys

I have been so Generously given a Browning 7MM STW from a stand up gentleman from our local range after loosing my firearms in the fire. I have never had an interest in this caliber I guess just never thought about it really. Just wondering what everyone's experience with it reviews sound pretty good to me. Probably load it with 140Gr Pills.

Thanks

I found re 22 or 7828 and 160 -175 gr bullets tend to work best. Of course recoil Is increased with the heavier bullets

I have owned six 7mmstw rifles, all with 26" barrels. I prefer 140 to 150gr bullets, and IMR7828 has worked well in every one of my rifles. Four of my rifles were 1 in 10" twist, and they produced the best accuracy with 140gr bullets at around 3500fps. My other two rifles have 1 in 9" twists, and they do slightly better with the 150gr TTSX at around 3400fps. I did a little testing with other powders, and with 160gr bullets, but I settled on IMR7828 and 140-150gr bullets in every rifle. A 140 to 150gr TTSX driven at 3400 to 3500fps, has always produced great results on game for me, at distances to around 500 yards.

You cannot go wroing with this caliber. I had 5 of them so far and currently have 2. One in Cooper and other one is Sako 75. I love this caliber for it long distance ranges and variety of bullets. I was using Berger bullets but they were not great under 500 yards and I have to shoot the animal again specially if there were within 200 years. I got tired of burgers and currently I am shooting 168gr Nosler Long Range Accoubond and have a great load for it for both of my guns. Dropped a doe at 843, 760, 702. Dropped Elk at 582 and bull moose at 438 with same bullet and several more animals within 500 yards ranges. Yes there is a kick in it but while shooting I don't feel the kick or hear any shot just like all of us.

Find a load if you reloads and have fun with it.

In my Custom 7 STW I used H1000 and 140 gr Barnes TSX (before TTSX and LRX was introduced) at 3450 ft/sec and 160 gr Barnes MRX at 3300ft/sec over H870( now discontinued powder, MRX are discontinued as well).

I've sold this one as I have Sako 75 SS in same caliber.

When I've got Custom there was no 7 mm STW brass available so I fireformed my brass from 8 mm Remington.

Great cartridge, finding brass has been tough lately.

If you get dies for it you can come over again and use my gear. I have some imr 7828 at the house to. Hopefully some day in the near future the range will be open again.

I find my own 7mmstw very pleasant to shoot, but I went with a slightly heavier barrel and a McMillan stock with a Decellerator installed. On the other hand, a friends factor 700 was not at all comfortable to shoot.

All guns react different. My rifle is pretty lightweight and I am a bit of a wimp to recoil I will admit. I also have a rock as a butt plate lol

A friend has a Remington Model 700 in 7 STW---he has harvested quite a few deer using 140 grain Partition bullets---results were devastating.

Exactly what I ran in mine in the early nineties.
Flat shooting and hard hitting, good luck keeping the target in the scope for a follow up shot...

What hunting cartridge will allow you to keep the target in the scope? None me thinks.....
Kind of a statement that really means nothing.
But I bet the action I use will be faster than most bolt actions and will put you on target faster....
And by looking at my trophy room I am not too worried about things the way they are now anyways lol

Oh I thinks I have squeezed the cannon off a little to rash and over the back the copper flew...thank god some stick around so I could bare down and get that second shot off...
My little 6-284 allows me to squeeze, see the hit, cycle the bolt and see the animal through the scope during the process...my STW would allow me to see sky, ground, cycle and then look through the scope...if I gave it to a newbie I use to tell them to hang on she will bit you above the eyebrow....
