About 10 (+?) years ago I was working pipe line across an old farm.
This building I later found out is the old Cross Lake School.

Tried to buy it from the old farmer. Wouldn't sell it. Looked at it couple year later & a big room leak has ruined the hard wood floor. Plus there is other damage from cows using it. Building is toast now.

One of a couple tractor there : again, he wouldn't sell anything.

Great old thread. Speaking of predecessors to Kubotas we had a Massey Harris Pony for years. I think it was a pretty rare little beast.

Today we have a little Kubota we bought in the 1970s. Still running strong.

Interesting read. Brings back memories.

My first time driving anything was on a Ford 8N. From there I graduated to dads Super W6 and then to his 66 Chev step side short box.

Over the years I've run many old tractors. John Deer model R with pup motor.
IHC WD9, Massey 44, 1470 Case, 800 Case, Case model C, 830 and 930 Case, W4, W6, TD18, and others I forget the name of.

Recently I was contracted to get four old tractors running. A WD9 with the gas and spark not working. A W6 with drity fuel system. A W6 with a siezed motor and a Massey 44 that did not run.

I fixed three of the four but ran out of time.

The only machine I own now is a Massey Fergason model 50 backhoe.

I have my grandfathers 1953 JD 40s which I had fully restored a few years back for use in my wedding. As well, I have a 1975 JD 2130 which I have had fully tuned up with new rubber put on as well.

For lovers of old tractors, The Battle River museum in Manning has an old tractor parade every summer as part of the Manning Rodeo.

I have photos of many of the tractors taken at the parade if anyone wants to see them.

They have some unique old tractors such as a Lanz Bulldog, a Field-Marshall Series 3, and a Farmall A. I believe they have over 50 restored tractors that they run in the parade.

OK so I have been looking for an older tractor for the farm I bought - hope the following is not considered a derail

I need something that is:

reliable/easy to work on
can handle an FEL for moving crap around the yard site
can push snow
can be used to put about 60-80 acres in hay.

I am thinking that the following is needed...

30-50hp
gas or diesel but diesel preferred
3 pt hitch
live pto
power steering
manual transmission

Of course the real challenge is my poor mans budget of approx. $5,000!

Hoping some of you knowledgeable guys can provide advice as this is my first foray into this!

Farm auctions.

Attend a few but keep your hands in your pockets. Figure out what sells for what before you try bidding. It's far too easy to spend way too much.

You should be able to find what you want within your budget, if you don't get in a hurry.
Look for something from the 70s or 80s, mid sized. Too small and the acreage owners will bid it through the roof. Too big and the farmers on a budget will bid it up.

Keep in mind, what you are looking for is outdated but still in demand. They're used for yard work around farms.
You have to be patient to get it at the price you want.

Sweet!

Great auction for those looking for a restored tractor but not the auction for buying a work tractor.

I've always thought that the Reynolds Museum should put a big old steam tractor out on a platform display along QEII with a sign mentioning just how close the museum is to that highway.

Think of all the people that might then realize what they've been missing as they do their boring old point "A" to "B" runs.

As is, it's just another one of our "hidden treasures" that often the taxpayer supports when with just some decent promotion could be self sustaining if not hugely profitable.

Some of the tractors I operated from the age of 9 until I quit farming and ranching in 1999. In no particular order and I know I missed a couple.

The designs in photos 2, 3 and 7 almost have an Art Deco look to them.
