Default Browning X-Bolt trigger freeze - fact or fiction?

Considering an X-Bolt for duty in cold late season conditions where sub zero temperatures are likely. There's lots of "speculation" on forums that the X-Bolt's trigger design is more likely to freeze than other competitors. Has this actually happened or is it simply another unverified Internet myth?

Never had mine freeze and my buddy uses one for his dog gun so I don't know if that's true.

Interesting thread here. A couple of very good gunsmiths weighing in on this one including the OP.

Say what you like, but your testimonial is on the internet.

I'm a Browning fan through and through. I've also bought some other much more expensive rifles but I always end up coming back to Brownings. Having said that, I must say that I'm not really that impressed with the trigger on any of the X-bolts that I've had. I've never had one freeze up but the lightest I've been able to get the pull down to on any of them is still over 4 pounds.

I know nothing about the X bolt rifle or trigger, what does the manufacture use for oil on them?

A light coat of sewing machine oil has worked good with our Remington rifle triggers.

The only issues that I have heard of with triggers freezing, occurred because someone that didn't know any better oiled the trigger.

This is not the case. At all. Get in the blowing snow at near zero and all kinds of bad things happen. Fair weather hunters tend not to have these problems.

I have hunted in blowing snow, and in freezing rain that left a layer of ice on my rifle, and no issues, but I don't own a Browning rifle. A friend did have a frustrating experience when his tang safety iced over though.

I am by no means an expert, but I never had any trigger issues with mine and I hunted some pretty cold days.

Makes a good story for Browning haters and people who don't own one.
Mine is flawless in any weather.

Never had an issue with mine. I've got the adjustable trigger but I don't feel the need to mess with it as I'm quite happy with the way it is! Especially with cold hands and winter gloves. Mine is a 270 win, I would consider an adjustment if it were a super long range caliber but with a 270 what's a half inch within its respective range really? Browning rules in my books

I was chatting with a guy that had an x bolt. I asked him about his rifle and how he liked it. He told me that his firing pin had frozen up once. No reason for him to diss his own gun?

I've have never lubed anything except for the outer bolt and barrel on mine but I do wonder if that cheap federal brass that leaves flakes in my action could possibly work its way in somewhere?

Fill your boots. People come on here and ask. They get answers and do what they want anyway.

I have no experience with Brownings however have had a couple of Rem 700's freeze up at -30C on two occasions. In both cases I had previously taken the bolts apart stripped them of all grease and lub then gave them a light coat of G96. A hunting buddy sold his Browning 1895 single shot after having two failures at extreme cold temperatures as well.

Not to derail but are the M700s prone to freezing? Any recommendations for cold weather bolt guns. Also my abolt has never froze up.

My experience is there seems to be a critical low temperature point where Rem. 700 don't like to fire. I should mention in the case of my rifles the sear released, the firing pin fell, but not with enough force to ignite the primers. The primers were dented but not to the point of ignition. I would expect the lower the temp the less potential energy in a compressed spring.

I have never had an issue with a 700 failing to fire in cold weather, but I don't use oil in the bolt. Even G-96 GunTreatment can cause issues in cold weather.
