Default Finally found some. I think

Went camping with the family and on the trail there they were. I was also walking the Thomas burn site but Notta. I at least think these are proper morels as they are my first find. Here's a pic. Are they the real deal.

Found a few morels yesterday and. Also found what I believe are verpas? The cap looks very much like a morel(same color, shape, ridges) but the cap is attached only at the top of the stem. Stem is hollow with a bit if "fluff" inside. I hear mixed reports on whether you an eat them or not. Fried up the morels though.....yum

to be honest with you the 2nd one looks like a false morel (bulbous head) but the others look good. congrats
P.S....... prepared properly (parboiled) you should have no worries but please don't take my word for it.

They look like black morels to me. Picked a few bags of those last weekend and threw them on my steak. Just give them a quick boil to kill the bugs and enjoy.

You're asking a difficult question, which most are likely hesitant to respond to in case they are wrong. No one wants to see anyone get poisoned!

In my opinion, you have Black Morels (Morchella angusticpes). False morels do not have hollow stems, yours appear to have hollow stems and caps.

Hope this helps.

No doubt, those are Black Morels. If you are nervous, don't eat them. Nerves alone can make you think that you are getting sick due to the fungus.

Send them to me!

Hey Ronji,
I was about 5 miles from your place in the country and have found about 30 lbs. of black morels so far this week. A handful of golden morels too.

It's so dry around Calgary that the season is off to a slow start here. Found a dozen so far, but with the wind and the constant sun and no rain, the morels aren't too abundant yet.

I cooked up some last night in a cream sauce and served it atop sliced bbq elk roast, it was fantastic!

Gathered a pound today, further west than I have ever searched and they were the largest morels I have ever found in Alberta, tennis ball size.

We were out by Caroline yesterday and searched for a couple hours and found 8 plus a pile of verpas. It was our first attempt and just enough to encourage another trip soon.

I found some nice ones in the Tay river area two days ago. I made one heck of a good chilli last year with fresh morels.

I have to say that I think alberta deer takes the morel title this season. Just about the time I might have had a chance to find some,,,Life Happened.

I'm still going to try and get to the Higher elevation burns next week. They should still be flushing up high.

I've been eating morels 2-5 times a week haha.

Any luck this year? I found a few in my Bragg Creek spots, will probably go out for more this weekend. I hope they're just coming up a little later this year, but we haven't had much rain so who knows.

Default Morels

Wasn't as good of a year for us as some predicted in our area. Managed two feeds and half gallon dryed. Found most in our camp site in plane view and stepped on

I'm new to the whole morel mushroom picking and I found them all over the place where I was this weekend. I'm just wondering what they like as far as conditions.

From my limited experience they like lower, flat, forested areas, poplars (and I've heard dogwood). My spots have always been close to water and the right moisture level to grow some moss. When I see moss and rotting wood I slow down and start looking more closely.
