2017 Hay Prices
Wondering what everyone is selling round bales of good hay for this year. I know last year we were charging $60/bale, seems like there is more good hay around this year.

We are located SW of High River. While our hay was put up dry for a change, there was a lot less of it. Very short compared to previous years due to a severe lack of rain. I am guessing we have at least 20% less feed this year, and judging by the long spaces between bales on everyone else's places, it will be a common problem. So, I would think prices down here may be higher!

Good question
I sold mine $45 in the field. Could get more but might have to wait but I find if a guy holds on to it then the elk come and it's worthless then.

Trucking is brutal but they have to make a living as well.
As to the area that usually grows the better hay that's a tough one. Every area has its good and bad years. The most consistent I would say would be the guys set up with irrigation.

Gave the family discount for $50.
But I'm hearing $50-$60 is the going rate this year.
I would expect higher prices for the south.

I bought good early cut mixed bales, and did pretty good. Trucking hurts sometimes though depending on distance. Seems up here there was lots of thundershowers every 2-3 days after 1st week july to the end so guys were scared to cut. And then quite a few grasshoppers showed up and ate the alfalfa leaves and started on the grass so quailty will be variable.
45 delivered, 14-1450 on 320
55 delivered, 1750 on 110
10 bucks + 10 delivery - last years mixed 1350ish on 140.

Ran into a guy yesterday. From BC, buying hay to haul back there, for sale. The wild card in the deck.

Just came back from the Yukon. Non stop hay going north. I wonder how much those round bales are to the buyers door.

In our area a lot of good hay was put up the last week of June and first week of July. The last 3 weeks of july it seemed like it rained every other day. We havent had any rain in about 10 days and second cut is underway. Crops were good here and i averaged 4 bales/acre.

I sold mine for 3.5 cents/lb. it was rained on once and put up dry, alfalfa grass mix. We have lots of silage this year but the pasture is disappearing quickly so guys may be feeding sooner than they thought.

Couple weeks ago along sec. hwy. 631 there were 2 qtrs. in a row that had those big round bales in the field and ditch. Farmer had spray painted FREE on them.
I was wondering if someone was playing a prank on the farmer, or if the bales were not worth much to begin with. Perhaps straw bales? Looked green to me, but they were fresh.

12 bucks a square. Top dollar there. It amazes me that a few more farmers don't do small square bales. Always a good demand for them by the acreage owners. I know there's more handling involved but the returns are greater.

From what I see in the Peace Region, there are bales all over the place. Quite a few are still cutting and rolling. Many, many fields that were crop last year turned to hay this year. I am still wondering how that is going to play out for the cutting guys. It looks to me that there is a lot of hay compared to what we usually have around.

Sorry to de-rail...there's sfa for grazing here in central BC due to the wildfires, and likely won't be for a while, so Alberta growers can expect to see more product moving west.

Gonna be a lot of guys feeding pretty quick in many parts of Alberta as well. Pasture is running out quickly with the lack of rain. Gonna knock supply down pretty quick
