Welcome to Alberta, and to AO. First of all, don't assume that the New Brunswick regulations apply here, learn the Alberta regulations, as there are differences. Secondly, you might want to post this in the thread where people are looking for hunting partners.

The very top thread is what youre looking for. Find someone there in your area. Good luck! Read the regs over and over!

The ranges
Welcome. You will find the ranges and fields are much larger than what you grew up with. Your 30-30 is no longer the best choice for deer out here in the flat open country. There are lots of ducks, have fun.

Oh them's fightin' words to some here. LOL And realistically, if he's not used to taking 500 yards shots, the 30-30 IS the best choice for him... 'cause he shouldn't be taking 500 yard shots.
But yeah Densa, I knew what you meant, and generally agree.

30-30 will do fine here, most game is still shot under 200 yds. out here. On the other hand it's not like there are no long shots in NB, the whole province is pretty much a patchwork of clear cuts , plus lots of crop fields in the western side of the province, big bogs, etc., there are lots of opportunities for long shots. I will agree that it is tradition to still hunt in the bush or sit in stands and shooting long range was not all that common but nowadays flat shooting rifles and longer shots at game is becoming much more popular back there.
PS. Newbrunswickhunter please make sure your able to distinguish the difference between Mule Deer and Whitetails before you go hunting. Some guys new to the west seem to have trouble telling the difference.

Pretty sure you got to be a resident for at least a year before you can hunt in alberta too.

Perhaps you should read the regulations before posting incorrect information?

Every fall I get the feeling from posts on AO that damn few people actually read the regs... pretty sad some of the comments from "experts"....

Nope, what you stated is the way it SHOULD be, unfortunately that's not the way it is.

This^^
If you live to hunt, you will never go back, lol.
Displaced NBer been here almost 7yrs now.The hunting opps in AB are incredible by comparison, despite all of the negativity you might read here.I see more deer on a good day then most of my hunting bud's in NB will all fall, and regularly pass on bucks that I would shoot in a NB heartbeat.
You might have better luck getting some help if you state what area of AB you are living, its a huge province.

Agreed, lots of good bush bucks have been whacked with the old 30/30. Along with some big Moose and bears.
