Default Airmiles

Who still uses them? Used (3 months ago) to be 1300 for a low season ticket to Abbotsford from Calgary, 1500 high season. Now the “cheapest” ticket is 2600, and up tp 4300 depending on the time of day. Went from being worth it to a slap in the face.

Far better off with a WestJet MasterCard or even Visa Avion through RBC.

I still keep using airmiles because the girl at the store keeps asking to see it! What can I say.

I still collect and use them, as well as Aeroplan (different suppliers I use have different loyalty programs), I collect a lot through my business. If you have the Onyx card, you get way better flights/miles, same as diamond status with Aeroplan. I also get one 'companion' flight a year up to 1700 miles, with my Amex Reserve. So my wife and I usually go out to Victoria for a long weekend, only costs me Miles for my seat and wife's is complimentary. I have gotten great use out of both plans over the years flying family and friends around.

What does it take to get to an onyx card?

We use it still. We have never redeemed it for travel but every 3-4 months the wife and I get a decent night at the movies with some snacks included too.

If I'm not mistaken you have to collect 6000 miles per year (which is a given for my business) or if you have the Amex Reserve Card you automatically get Onyx status. Card cost me a hefty fee but the perks and companion flight, travel lounges, front row tickets to events, concierge service (never being on hold with airmiles! Imagine!) all make it worthwhile to me. We use them as a family.

We use the air miles to get Calgary Zoo passes.

Great stocking stuffers for the inlaws and their kids.

I bought a fair amount of Best Western Gift cards over the years with Airmiles as well, that way you don't have to pay taxes out of pocket as you do when you book a room with Miles. Saved us a pretty penny when we were travelling all over for hockey.

Yes still earn them. Paid for an Alaskan cruise for two one time. I've got 20,000 ready to use on something.

Default Air miles

You can also use air miles at Shell stations to get discounts on gas purchases.

I told my parents to give me one of their cards, they don't have a lot of money and my moms been able to fly out more than she would have been able to otherwise over the years.

They also use them for night's out at the movies, it's nice to know that they get to do something nice once in a while, i rarely see them more than once a year.

I bought the black air miles bank of montreal mastercard for $100.00 per year. For me a senior it has not been worth it as I do not get as many miles as when I was working. It seems I break less than even as every year I have to buy a new coffee pot or a toaster or other small appliance with air miles.

I just checked the air miles map calculator and it still says you can get a low season flight from Alberta to BC/pacific northwest for 1400 airmiles.
