Age is probably the best word to use, basically they are flavoring the beer with JD. it would be much easier if they just spiked it with JD but the tax rate is different and that is why they use old barrels.

Innis & Gunn has one that uses bourbon barrels it's very tasty, it's likely what I will try and clone for my next batch. Though I do have a bucket of sour cherries that is just screaming to be put to use in a wheat beer.

There is a place in Calgary called the "Beer Vault" it has lots of Alberta craft beer.

How many of you like sour beers.

I expect that will be the next big thing after the IPA thing goes away.

Some good beers to be had around Alberta these days.

Ribstone Creek - Old Man Winter
Bent Stick - 4:30pm
The Grizzly Paw Brewing Co. - Rundlestone Session Ale
The Dandy Brewing Co. - Golden Brown Dandy
Hell's Basement Brewing - Ryes Against the Machine
Troubled Monk - Open Road

Not really a beer but worth a try is Fallen Timber Meaderys Hopped Mead.

As well as a few of note that are not Alberta made but just darn good.

Brew Dog - Punk IPA
Deschutes - Jubleale & Obsidian Stout
Bow Valley - Brown Ale
Driftwood Brewery - Fat Tug IPA

Dragonstooth Stout from Elysian Brewery out of Seattle is one of the better beer's I've had. Have found it in Edmonton a few times.

I find a lot of "craft" beers are in competition to see who can put the most hops in their brews, and all one can taste is bitter, bitterer, bittererer. Like taking a swig of Corona then licking a truck tire.

Good beer shouldn't be hoppy at all, and should taste like the beer it is.
Thanks. I will try!

Thumbs up Time to start again!

I used to make a lot of my own beer, back in the day (and so did my father). Reading through this thread has got me thinking about starting it up again. I think I may still have some of my old equipment stored away somewhere.

Thanks for the prod

Haven't found one I like yet. Had a sour Belgian raspberry thing that was close last winter.

But I can pound IPAs like they are going out of style!

They seem to be hit or miss usually I find. I do think you are right with Sours gaining popularity. Lots of small breweries are experimenting with Kettle Sours already. I doubt the IPA will go anywhere either. They are easy to brew and can have a host of different flavors. A beautiful style for a craft brewery.

im no authourity on beers but
me and lady friend try to promote local microbrewerys for a sampler.
this usually one or two that are better than the other but overall I am usually disapointed as a rule.
im always dissapointed with the IPA's, who can drink that...?

I’ve been drinking a fair bit of Big Rocks Scotch Ale lately. It’s 7% but you would never believe it to taste it. It is very smooth with a fantastic flavour

Default Sabco system

for all you beer guys; I'm putting my Sabco system up for sale; this is an awesome professional system.. I'll have it up in the For Sale Section soon.. complete setup for you guys who want to go bigger than a home brew.

I've been really liking the raspberry beer from Brewsters and their peach is good too. People Skills from Tool Shed is a go to as well.

There is an App "untapped" that you can keep track of everything that you have drank and rate it as well.

The fiancé and I travelled to Victoria and tried many craft breweries there on our trip, from Victoria to Tofino. This is our new thing. Really enjoyed almost all offerings from Vancouver Island Brewing, unfortunately can't find it for sale in any stores

There's a brand new brewery in Sylvan Lake just off Hwy 20 across from Tim Hortons, called Snake Lake. Great bunch of guys that run and own it, awesome environment in the tasting room, and fantastic beers. I particularly like the saison and red ale.

Boy times are a changing! Every little town and or neighborhood has a small brewery popping up.

I remember going into the liquor store and you had some Labatt's products and some Molson's products to chose from. Plus a couple from the old Calgary Brewery. But the selection was minimal. Now it's a wide open field of flavours from all the micro brewers.
