Looking to trade a lead on bow-hunt moose near Stony Plain for whitetail deer lead
Hi AO members. I was out last night October 23 in WMU 248, just north of Stony Plain on some crown land/small lakes. It’s a secluded spot and hard to find. No direct access with motor vehicles, you have to walk in a few hundred yards. I spotted (actually stepped on) fresh moose scat and heard some grunting in the bush near me. I am not sure if it was a bull or cow. I had spotted some other scat piles nearby, but this was definitive proof of moose here currently.
This part of the 248 WMU is bow-hunt only and the surrounding property to this area is privately owned ranch land, mostly trees and grasses. I don’t bow hunt, so I would like to trade this moose location lead for a solid AND current location lead to rifle-hunt a whitetail deer(s). It can be a doe or buck within 100 km of Stony Plain (WMU 224, 242, 244, 246, 250, 252, 334, 336, 337, 348, 505, 506, 507, 508), or shotgun-hunt in Strathcona county (specialized part of 248). Preferably crown land, but if you know the landowner that would be great.
Private message me if you have something that fits the bill, and we can swap the details later this week.

There is no crown land directly north of Stony Plain. The spot you are describing is in my back yard. The moose is an old cow. The land is all private. All four quarters of it. I take it that you walked in from 779...

So it appears the OP was trespassing, and wants to trade information on a location where he should never have been in the first place.

I hope the OP now understands the importance of knowing with certainty where you are, who owns the land, and any relevant rules... ignorance is not an excuse... county maps are cheap and easy to use... absolutely no excuse.

I did not say it was directly north of Stony Plain, it is just north of Stony Plain. I was not trespassing and would never condone doing that. There is access through reserve land. I have verified with Parkland county maps that this location is accessible and not owned by anyone.
Please read carefully before posting replies.

Just because someone said I was on their property, does not mean I was. And seeing as I don't bow hunt, why would I be even looking for a moose on private property in 248? The area I described can be one of dozens of locations, and I was just there walking.
Don't believe everything you read....
I suggest every hunter get his county map out and check if someone owns property before they head out on it.

I’ll be the first to apologize when I’m in the wrong, I shouldn’t have assumed you were trespassing, thank you for correcting us, as for your original post I don’t live any where close so I can’t help with whitetails there but if you are ever willing to make the trip south around Calgary shoot me a pm and I’ll get you on some whitetails.
Again sorry for assuming you were trespassing

That is a pretty accurate description of my property. The moose fits in too.
I'm glad that you are describing a different location. I'm somewhat accustomed to trespassers due to the close proximity with Edmonton.
Edit: I'm looking at the county map right now and there is no crown/county land north of Stony up to the county line...

Your property is crown land? I have some doubts.

You are very astute. I guess you better stay off Crown land or I'll charge you with trespassing.

Is he talking about the Chickakoo Lakes Rec Area? Don't think you can hunt there...
According to Ihunter, there is no crown land north of SP in wmu 248...
...so I'm pretty lost at what's happening here haha

Pretty sure I know this place. Lots of hunting pressure and dirt bikers riding through the middle of it, even though they shouldn’t be. Not the place it once was.

I don't think that shooting a borderline geriatric moose cow constitutes as hunting.
If you can get permission for the land, then give 'er hard!

Considering the area, wouldn't that same spot where you saw the moose also very likely hold deer?
You probably already found a great WT spot.

I was scammed. I gave my gps coordinates to trophy moose and the poster said they will let me know next week. Sounds like the promises I hear from those Nigerian Princes wanting to invest in me!

I wonder how many deer spots were traded for the same moose spot 🤔

Is it really that hard to find moose droppings in the bush?
Also, what's exactly being traded here, fresh moose scat for deer scat? One of the weirder threads on here.
