Not 100% effective in France.

People say we will be there soon. I think we are there now. Think about how much tax we are paying now.
They are saying that they are rioting because the French government wants to raise that gasoline tax up to $49 within 10 years. Can you imagine?
What’s our carbon tax at? $10/tonne and we are already noticing the extra costs in everything we buy. The Calgary school board paid 3.3 billion in Carbon tax! 3.3 billion out of our kids education. They are saying that to really fight global warming we need to pay $50/tonne. What’s that going to look like? And the kick in the nuts is anything after $30/tonne is just going into the general slush fund.
So if you ask me about the rioting in France, my comment would be that I am surprised it isn’t happening here.

I think you're right.
I was sent a survey over a year ago - When it came to the question about what Canadian identity means to me, I had to stop and think. Then I realized that what I traditionally thought was Canadian identity does not reflect reality.
We are rapidly losing the glue that holds us together. And that bothers me.
Come to think of it, I have never finished that survey...

I just double checked your figure on the Calgary School Board. It was 3.3 Million last year, not Billion... But still. That a gross amount to cost a school board.
Now, Carry on

I fear that Canadian governments will look to the other global jurisdictions to use as targets for taxes to impose. They’ll research at what taxation point the public finally resorts to rioting and perhaps aim for 1.3% below that threshold, or maybe 1.3% above it because we’re Canadian.

It is a delicious irony that Government (or EU?) Regulation makes yellow vests required equipment in all motor vehicles.
Good Luck, YMMV.

'police outlawed the wearing of yellow jackets'
Our RCMP can do this now?
Hell in a handbasket.

The new Liberal totalitarian state
totalitarian state - a government that subordinates the individual to the state and strictly controls all aspects of life by coercive measures.

The gas tax was just the straw that broke the camel’s back. I’ve seen video of Firefighters and medical personnel joining the protests. Even some police are showing solidarity with the protesters. Who knows how big this snowball will get. Hopefully big enough to get the job done and send a message globally that the silent majority is fed up with this nonsense.

I fear that this is only the beginning, and that things are going to get much worse unless we see some significant changes in attitude by the various governments.

This is a WeAreChange.org video on the protests.
No political sides in this, just reporting on what's going on, on the ground.
Not sure it's not just about the tax. There is definite anger against media and calls for Macron to resign.

I have been following the situation in France for a while now. The momentum continues to build and this weekend the confrontation hits a new peak, tear gas and rubber bullets fly everywhere. Made me want to buy some gas masks and goggles just in case Canada goes to hell. Any suggestions where to get good quality products?

Do you realize they're rioting against austerity, and tax breaks for business, and against the average joe paying more? The carbon tax they're protesting is something people pay, rather than businesses and that is the main thing that set them off.
So, despite how it's spun by some media here, it's not a right wing revolt. It's more of an uprising demanding higher minimum wage, and increased taxation of the rich/corporations.

If you say so. Most people would share the "why" of what you state.

Well wouldn't it be nice if we had impartial media reporting nothing but facts instead of a government funded propaganda machine gaslighting it's viewers with scripted biased FAKE news that serves corporate international interests?

Be honest- does what you wrote actually make sense to you. There are a lot of different groups involved in these protests, with numerous goals- but the majority are not inconsistent with the right wing. With this many players involved, making any sort of definitive statement (as you have) is absurd

How about this take?
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-46499996
What is the yellow vest movement?
The movement began as a protest against a rise in duties on diesel, which is widely used by French motorists and has long been less heavily taxed than other types of fuel.
Diesel prices have risen by about 23% over the past 12 months - and Mr Macron's decision to impose a tax increase of 6.5 cents on diesel and 2.9 cents on petrol from 1 January enraged protesters.
Mr Macron had blamed world oil prices for three-quarters of the price rise, but said higher taxes on fossil fuels were needed to fund renewable energy investments.
Who are the 'gilets jaunes'?
Will the environment be the true victim of France's riots?
Who supports the protesters?
The rallies became known as the "yellow vest" or "gilets jaunes" movement because protesters took to the streets wearing the high-visibility yellow jackets that are required to be carried in every vehicle by French law.
The government has since agreed to scrap the fuel tax increase and has frozen electricity and gas prices for 2019.
But protests have also erupted over other issues, including calls for higher wages, lower taxes, better pensions and easier university entry requirements.
The movement's core aim, to highlight the economic frustration and political distrust of poorer working families, still has widespread support.

Protest timeline
17 November: 282,000 protesters - one dead, 409 wounded - 73 in custody
24 November: 166,000 protesters - 84 wounded - 307 in custody
1 December: 136,000 protesters - 263 wounded - 630 in custody
8 December : 136,000 protesters - 118 wounded - 1,220 in custody
I get the movement, I understand. The problem is the fact that they are smashing restaurants, stealing alcohol, burning vehicles, looting. If this happened here the Military would be called in. If it happened in the States (again) the Police and Military would be mowing down people.
Rough times ahead.
