my belief is the animal deserves respect whatever it maybe,so I give all the fur I put up my up most attention to detail,oh and they look awesome all washed and blow dried and smell better lol, alot of time goes into each piece for sure.

Great Effort. I appreciate the pride you take in producing your pelts. I think taking time with each pelt will usually get you a grade higher on the pay scale too. And make more garment quality fur, not just trim.
When I read about guys skinning coyotes in 3 minutes and fleshing and boarding in 20 minutes I would bet that those pelts would rarely make select grade. IMO trappers have a responsibility to produce the best fur they can.

Thanks for comment,I assure you that there is no 3 minute skinning in my shed and I take my time fleshing and every single coyote gets dog shampoo and blow dry with shop vac, brushing is also important, I wouldn't have it any other way.

That sure is nice looking fur! It's easy to see the care that you put into putting them up.

It shows. If you have the time to do it there’s no doubt in my mind that you’ll get higher grades because of it. I used to hand wash but now it’s a washing machine with baby shampoo and conditioner. After I turn them fur out I put them in front of an industrial fan for a day to get the knots out and fluff them up. It works well and saves me time.

I was always of the same opinion, regarding higher grades if washed and clean. That was right up til last winter when I talked to a neighbour that has been trapping his entire life, and he's in his 60's now... after last yrs sale when there was all that talk about top-lot making $6-hundred something a piece for that handful of coyotes, I got a call from my neighbour and was told those coyotes were his. Or at least a-few had to be, I think there were 8 in that lot and he did say they were his. Anyway. I asked about pelt finishing and what he does to clean them; you won't believe what his answer was...
He scoffed and said he hasn't cleaned them for years. Told me they charge a fee for cleaning that comes off your cheque now (drumming charges) and replied why would I waste my time and make more expense doing it here!? ... I couldn't believe it, but who knows. Hard to argue with a guy who's been shipping for over 40 years. His comments on higher grades had everything to do with how well you flesh & prep it before it ever goes fur-out* Said your handling & prep (there) plus color, is what trumps all. Take it for what ya guys want.
I still do clean the ones of my own that happen to be stained worse than the others from blood (if they are) but now I always hear what he told me ringing in my ears while I'm doing it! Sure makes you wonder.

If it ain't broke don't fix it I say, each to their own,but it will always be a well furred animal, well prepared that will grade higher,if the quality is there in the animal then it will do well IMO.I will always do mine my way, because they are mine.

Fur
Is the fur graded before or after the auction house cleans and drums them.

Had the privilege of seeing Peters work in person a couple weeks ago. Very very nice looking pelts. Very professional-a true craftsman who takes a lot of pride in his work. Also a great guy to do a gun deal with. Mickey
