Default SKS question

So I just bought an Russian made SKS online and was wondering what all I need to do to make it legal. Beside pinning the magazine to 5. Can the bayonet and stud stay attached?

If you bought one of the recent imports, it should all ready have a spacer in the magazine to do that.

It should have a pin welded in the bottom of the hinged mag hopefully not the crude block used on some.PS don't waste time or $$$$$ on reciever mts for scoping as the do not hold their zero.A side mt by Choate does but is hard to find in Canada. An 870 shotgun side mt can be made to fit mounted high enough to allow dissasembly for cleaning.I'd stockpile some ammo as Ossama Obbama in a fit of paranoia isn't allowing export of any military ammo.Honeymoons over in the States now that they figured out what they've elected. In Kalispell this summer the gunstores had a 200 rd limit daily purchase per customer to try and prevent ammo hoarding.Same as every election...........................Harold

Milarm in Edmonton had or has them including the ammo , I think the prices ranged from 150 to 300 don't quote me on that but they were relatively inexpensive as I thought that might be a cool guy to get , just to hear go Bang .

Question

HelloNew here,Im also in the market for an SKS and I know Canadian Tire in Red Deer is selling a bundle that includes a Russian SKS,Cleaning kit,a sling,a case(I think) and some bulk ammo for the price of $269.I have a question about detachable magazines.I want an SKS to shoot gophers, coyotes and just plain old screwing around.Im looking at these 20,30,40 and even 50! round detachable magazines that replace the SKS stock fixed mag.Would i get in trouble for shooting varmints and plinking with one of these?

Very much so

"Q. What is the maximum number of cartridges that a firearm magazine can legally hold?

As set out in Criminal Code Regulations, some large-capacity magazines are prohibited regardless of the class of firearm to which the magazines are attached. As a general rule, the maximum magazine capacity is:

* 5 cartridges for most magazines designed for a semi-automatic centre-fire long gun; or
* 10 cartridges for most handgun magazines

A large-capacity magazine is not prohibited if it has been permanently altered so that it cannot hold more than the number of cartridges allowed by law. Acceptable ways to alter a magazine are set out in the regulations.

There is no limit to the magazine capacity for semi-automatic rim-fire long guns, or for other long guns that are not semi-automatics. "

The SKS is not a sniper rifle and is very loud. I don't think its a gopher gun. The surplus ammo that you will find is steel core copper jacketed bullets and is great for plinking though.

I just bought a SKS from The Moving Target in Entwhistle. $189 on sale.

The thing is so much fun to shoot, next to no recoil, I put 260rds through it then went to clean it and it was very clean inside. Which is surprising for a gas operated rifle I would have expected the gas chamber to be real dirty.

I shot it out to 75yard and was real accurate which was surprising from what most have said about them. This week comming uo I will be shooting out to 200yards to see how well it shoots.
I would highly recommend one of these rifles for someone who wants to go out shoot at pop bottles or what not and have a great afternoon.

If anyone knows where to get some hollow points I would like a box or two of them. Would make a greatback up rifle for in the bush.

Default Since no body has mentioned it yet.....

Just a reminder that the firing pin and charging piston needs cleaned with windex or water to rinse off the salt left behind from shooting the corrosive ammo. (surplus bought in the crate). The gas piston and firing pin will rust up if its not washed out. I use winter washer fluid cause its cheap and plentyful.
But the hunting ammo is ok to shoot without worry. If the firing pins rusts up, it causes slamfires.

They are around $15/per box at CT in Red Deer, for the Privi Partizan. They are the soft point, no hollow points though. Ive seen soft points in WSS and other gun shops.

If you're looking for an SKS, I've compiled an exhaustive list of Canadian suppliers, all of whom sell the Ruskies (although i think one has a Chinese)
Many of the sites sell lots of other guns (especially PS Militaria), but they all have at least one listing for an SKS and most in the range of $250-$300.

Top 2 Picks:
http://psmilitaria.50megs.com/guns.html
http://westrifle.com/home.html

The rest:

Hope that helps some people, and i hope im not being overly intrusive for my very first post

If you are looking for soft points for your SKS I was able to find them at Milarm in Edmonton last week. They are made by a Serbian Company cant remember the name right now. Other than that there is an a severe lack of 7.62x39 ammo that you can use for hunting(dont tell me i know they dont shoot that straight) because of the export laws in the states.

Default Ammo for SKS

It is just so hard to Import Ammo into Canada. It is taking me more than 1.3 years to bring a container. Plus you need to buy a lot. I will bring one somewhere in Feb.
