Try them both if you can find a place that carries both. Look at things from a few distances if possible and potentially at dusk as it's getting dark.

Generally the better brand (even the lower end stuff) has better glass - but not always.

I'd tend toward the lower model of the high-end brand.
Compare it to cars: would you rather have a fully loaded, flagship model Kia or a base model Mercedes? For me its a no-brainer.

Buy the best quality you can afford, then expand your budget a bit more. The Kia/Mercedes analogy works for me, but better glass means a more enjoyable hunt. Period!

Lots of guys hunt for years with cheap optics. When they get older they can finally afford better glass. Once you have used top glass you will have wished you sacrificed a little and sprang for it when you were young. Your eyes were better and you could walk a lot farther, the glass would have got a bunch more use and you would get a bunch of benefit.

I was lucky enough that my Dad taught me young to buy top quality gear, the older I get the more I appreciate what great advice that was.

I had a Vortex Viper on my Sako Finlight and even though it is a decent scope, I still find it as entry level. Looking at many brands and models I decided (with the help of huge price discount) to go with a laser scope for a faster range estimation. I am glad I took the $1300 leap because my aim improved as well do to higher magnification and better light distribution.
I am too poor to waste money on single use products!

Id go lower model of high end brand...they are more likely to stand behind their product should something go wrong.
