Default Powdered milk

I do the majority of my grocery shopping at the local Co op, for the most part not very busy so I go there. They have been out of powdered milk for at least 6 wks and say they cannot get any. Is it worth my time to check out other grocery stores and see what they have or is it a general shortage. What is everyone else seeing for powdered milk? I use it for bread and am running low.

My local Co-Op has been telling me the same thing reowdered milk. It's been several weeks since I have seen any. I'm going to go shopping tomorrow and check out the other local stores.

Also, my local Co-Op is out of cheese right now. All hard/block cheese is sold out. Weird.

The lady at the checkout said it was an issue with their supplier and she didn't know when either powdered milk or cheese were going to be stocked again.

That was another thing that was being hoarded by pandemic shoppers, though we did find some. Yeast was the most difficult thing to locate.

I bought a few cans of canned milk, just in case, for my coffee. I don't think the hoarding instinct is quite as severe in rural areas. Lots of block cheese to be found and on sale.

Hey piker I don't know where you are, but if you're in Calgary, Sobey's at 17 ave and 52 st SE here had 10 or 15 bags when I was there on Saturday.

They didn't have a supply problem with anything including meat yet; except just once 3 weeks ago when there were no paper towels.

So far so good.

Yeah, I wanted the powdered milk and bread maker yeast so I could make my 60% whole wheat "homemade" bread and can't find either ingredient.

My local Co-Op is a rural location (45 mins from a city) and I didn't think the hoarding was as bad here, but maybe it's a combination of hoarding and Co-Op's supply problems they are telling me about?

Most grocery stores will no longer accept calls of this nature, I don't blame them. I lucked into yeast early, I got a 2lb container from Costco, it's a little much but all they had. Maybe I'll run an ad in kijiji and make a swap.

bulk barn would be my recommendation. Or check Superstore's homepage they only show it when in stock I believe. I use it for baking too.

May sell you yeast in a little container if you ask?If you are using reg yeast in a breadmaker cut back 1/4 tsp on the salt and or increase the yeast 1/4tsp for fuller loaves.

Is Bulk Barn even open? The majority of those stores are a cross-contamination wonderland ......

The bulk sections at Co-op and other stores are emptied.

Question Result of the warehouse closure?

It may not be a product availability issue, it may be a logistical problem for FCL to keep their southern Alberta stores supplied from remote warehouses since Calgary Co-Op severed their contract with FCL corporate and closed the warehouse in SE Calgary. I believe that warehouse was used to support all retail locations in southern Alberta, not just Calgary locations.
Check your local Sobey's or Safeway.

Could call Bulk Barn in the Hat to check if they have any in stock.
403-526-4403

They scoop product for you, but let you attend with them.
In the past I have also purchased Buttermilk Powder

Usually sausage supply shops also commonly carry milk powder

Super Store sells shelf stable ultra high heat pasteurized milk in a tetra pack if that’s helpful.

Talked to a guy who is on dairy farmers of Canada. Farmers are frustrated at this. From what he said they are dumping because the processors will not take more raw milk because they are overstocked. The processors told them that the stores haven't changed their order levels at all so they keep running out. They said if the stores would just order more it is there for them.

fresh yeast? Superstore sells it at the bakery counter as well. Recommended is 3x the quantity (by weight in grams) and dissolving it before in water. It freezes pretty well but crumble it so you can portion it however you need to. I wouldn't reduce salt. Salz in bread is more than flavour, it's regulating fermentation and yeast activity. It also gives structure to the dough. 2-2.5% of flour total (again weight in grams) is a good range.

They do online / phone orders now. Pack it for you and then it's curbside pick up I hear.

They are but have implemented mandatory hand sanitation and the wearing of gloves upon entry. You now get to walk with your own personal shopper who will get the items for you. The only items you get to touch are at the till, the pay pad, door handle and your bagged goods.

Our local Save On Foods has pre-bagged bulk goods( generally 100g per bag) in the dispensers right now and they are asking that you have a staff member fill your bags if you require more. Good luck finding a staff member who isnt picking online orders though.

On a side note has anyone noticed that milk seems to go bad much faster now? All my milk seems to spoil at least 4 days before the expiry date since the whole covid thing started.

I always go to the back of the shelf and pick the longest expiry date. Haven't noticed early spoilage, habitually keep it in the fridge though.
