Default Pinhorn Ranch

Hey guys, I'm thinking about putting in for an undersubscribed doe MD tag for the Pinhorn Ranch area.
Just wondering if anyone on here has hunted down there recently and if it's uncomplicated to hunt that ranch? It looks huge and I'd imagine theres a few coulees where the mulies like to hang out.

Cheers.

It’s not a ranch! I gotta ask, why drive all the way from Calgary to kill a stinking Mulie doe?

pinhorn is tough hunting, unless you're familiar with the area. coulees are big alright. that is a long way to drive coming from calgary.

You need to request access from the Rangeland Approvals Team Lead SE Provincial Grazing Reserve Agrologist

Lol, I got caught up in undersubscribed feaver last night. I pictured me and my son driving down for a few days, whack a couple of does, have some laughs, drive home.
But then I woke up this morning and thought, that's going to cost me several hundred dollars between gas, lodging, food, etc. Just so I can help the Provincial government cull the cwd deer near sask/montana borders.

I'll pass.

Pinhorn, It's a huge piece of grassland used to grow cattle, but it's not a ranch? What is it?

It's a grazing reserve, and it's nowhere near the Sask.

“It’s not a ranch! I gotta ask, why drive all the way from Calgary to kill a stinking Mulie doe?”
“It's a grazing reserve, and it's nowhere near the Sask.”

I don’t think anyone gives a crap whether you call it a ranch or a grazing reserve.
The WMU boarders Saskatchewan, so it’s too far.
Is there a maximum driving limit that I’m not aware of to go hunt does?
This is just my friendly way of letting you know to lighten up.

OP. It sounds like a fine adventure. Go for it.

If your trip is just about meat pick something closer. If it an experience you are after come on down. It is a beautiful area, some of the views will take your breath away. Not sure what access is anymore or about lodging, but if it wasn't such a drive, I would go there just to hike.

Yeah, for me most hunts have a lot to do with the experience and being in great country. I have a saying "life's too short to hunt ugly country". Which I usually say when I'm hiking through a cut block in the 400's LOL.

I haven't spent a lot of time down in the deep Alberta south, been to Writing on Stone and just love it, the Sweetgrass Hills off in the distance, the history. Just a cool area.

But after looking into it, it does seem like there are lots of doe tags available in that area, that's what makes me wonder if it has something to do with CWD.

Pinhorn is no where near the SK border.

There are very few camping opportunities and no commercial lodging close to the reserve. You'll be putting on lots of miles between a camping spot/lodging and mule deer country in the reserve...........and gas..........there are no corner gas stations lol.

well its only 58 km from the boarder as the crow flies. So personally I dont think thats too far from Sask, unless your walking. But its how YOU view distances and how relative they are, so to you its no where near, to me its close. But thats not what was being discussed here anyways.

Anyways to the OP, why not go for it. Explore a new part of the province if you have never been there. It gives you a reason to go check it out.

Hunter it last year. 4 of us with 4 trophy tags and 4 undersubscribed doe tags.
3 days of walking. Many many miles.
Came home with 4 bucks, not one shot at a doe

All the does we saw were north of the grazing reserve on Private ag. Land.
