Default Reloading help 338-06

Quick question.

My rifle has a great group with IMR 4064 and Barnes TTSX 210gr from factory. So I figured it’s best to start there.

Problem is I can find reloading specs with that combo on Barnes site or IMR powder site. Want to start safe and low and work up. Any suggestions?

Thanks. I'll check my Hornady manual. Didn't think to check there as I wasn't using their bullets.

According to my Quickload program the 210 TTSX and 47.93 of IMR 4064 is 100% load density and only 2,452 FPS with a 22" barrel, but everyone that has used it knows hat Quickload is not "the end all and be all "

I agree that 4064 seems to be a subpar choice. I was just answering what he asked. Since u can comfortably pick up nearly 300 fps by just choosing a different powder fro. The Barnes load data I would definitely be doing that instead.

I have a couple of .338-06 and have excellent results with Ramshot Big Game powder. My hunting load is 58.7 gr and a 225 Accubond / Wby Brass. CCI 200 primer. It achieves 2675 at the muzzle with no issues at all. With a Modern action, loading a modern 338-06 to approx 58,000 psi has proven to be safe with about any bullet you want use. I use about the same charge weight and powder in my 35 whelen Ai and 9.3x62

Start lower and work up.

Good to see the vastly underrated .338-06 is gaining popularity.

Hopefully the groupings will be as tight with something a little faster. I have Varget and RL 15 that look like they should work as well. I also have some Nosler Partitions to try.

Remember that while the Cooper group looks real pretty, it is shot at 45 yards indoors. I would be willing to bet you could get groups like that with factory ammo at that distance. I would get some H414 and work up a load with that. The two powders Win 760 and H414 are right next to each other on the burn rate chart. They are producing the best velocity and are both much slower burning than Varget or 4064, they are closer to Ramshot or 4350 than to Varget. Part of getting the best accuracy and speed out of any gun is to pick the right powder burn rate to work with. I also like the slowest powder that provides the fastest velocity, as long as I am using normal for cartridge length barrels. I will go to faster powder to reduce muzzle flash and noise if shooting a short barrel version. Let us know how you make out.

IMR 4320 was the cat's PJ's when the round first came out.

I'm loading the 210 ttsx with 53.5 grs of RL15, Fed GM210M primers. Necked up Lapua 30-06 brass.
Rem 700 action, Benchmark 22" barrel.
5/8" 3 shot groups @ 150 yds.
2633 fps.
I stopped there during load work-up as I was happy with the accuracy.

Yeah I was very surprised when I saw the velocity as compared with the stuff on Barnes' sight

Thumbs up Powder choices

I have worked up some nice loads with H414/W760 and a 225 Hornady SP. good groups, under an inch of Moose. LOL. Coopers do shoot, at 100yds. and beyond. I can verify that. Mix and match your test loads and component's and have fun. !! Love that time on the bench before the Hunt. !! Kap Crk.

I use H414 with 225gr TTsX and ABs in my 338-06ai . Works great . Can’t recall powder charge but can get back to you on it

Try the Hodgdon site for reloading data. I was able to find other combinations that weren't in my manuals there.

I spoke with Salavee when I started loading for mine. I ended up shooting 210 Nosler Partitions on top of 58 grains of Ramshot Big Game in Weatherby brass, and using a CCI 200 primer. It shoots under MOA. I shoot 57 grains under the 200 Accubond.
If I use a Winchester WLR primer, accuracy is the same, but point of impact is about an inch higher.
