Default Small game hunting in bag game season

Does anyone have any advice where I can go after grouse this time of year, that isnt going to upset any big game hunters?

I was thinking of the WMUs close to Calgary that are draw only, but then do I risk ruining someone's draw?

All advice appreciated

I have also thought of this quite a bit. I would hate to scare someones animal away in draw only zones. After some reflecting I figure it's just the way it goes, at some point down the line when I draw in draw only zones I can't expect people to drive 2+ hours just because I am hunting in that area.

Look for other hunters and shoot a .22lr subsonic load. The cci 710 fps are very quiet. A sub sonic pellet rifle would probably be a good choice as well.

Good luck

I was kinda thinking along those lines. To be quite honest, I usually just hunt cut lines right next to the road anyway, and as we all know, not too many deer/deer hunters hanging around there

If you are on crown land you are just as entitled to the land as any other hunter.

Personally I would not worry about it and just go hunting. Just be respectful of others if you see a vehicle parked maybe drive down the road a ways to give some space. Its no different if you are hunting big or small game just try to give space and be safe

Go out and enjoy yourself

Grouse with a bow in the bush is a lot of fun if you are so inclined.

Pellet gun works for sure, I have never hunted with subsonic 22lr (although I have some to try).

All you can do is use your best judgment. If you see a few vehicles parked, might already be busy and groused out anyways.

I’ve had an area blown out by grouse hunters in rifle season and also had them push deer to me.

It just the way it goes, but good on you, it’s a great question

/\ /\/\/\ this right here. On a side note though it's a good opportunity to try out quieter methods. Sling shot and bearins, bow, pellet gun ECT. If those don t interest you or you don't have any of them just go do.your thing. You have the same rights as everyone else. Use appropriate respect same as you would while big game hunting

You perhaps could think of it the other way also. Just maybe you breaking that twig or firing off a round or two from the 12 or 20 is just what is needed for that buck to be distracted for that one needed second to make a mistake.

I’ve bumped deer to guys before that I didn’t even know were there until they got a shot at them.

Just go hunt

Crown land belongs to you as much as anyone

If you see someone who is already there, back off

Its simple. Share.

I've never met a big game hunter who was concerned about the quality of my upland outing. Go to where the birds are and lawfully hunt, whoever whines about it can suck a lemon!

The fact you are concerned about effecting someone else’s hunt you clearly are trying to respect others out hunting

I don’t think you will have a problem making the right choices

Hunt birds just the same as you would hunt big game. Don’t hunt right beside someone else, be mindful of where you are going and have fun. In areas that are pressured sometimes a shot spooks deer into moving that you would of never seen. Personally I’m mad for about 7seconds when I see someone on a main trail. But they have all the same rights as I have to being there. So you can fault them for wanting to use an area. But I get over it, and probably they do too. If not, I must have some very good hiding/burying spots for the 30+ hunters I see every time that I see

I would venture to say that not too many of the creatures in the bush haven’t seen a human before or heard a gunshot. So think of it as conditioning them for the rest of us

K country power lines and the legal end of Spray Lake. Clutched my chest a few times stepping on a grouse in these areas. Close to home for you.

I see plenty of Deer and Bear when I'm grouse hunting.

Just saying, , , ,

You are just as likely to push a Deer towards another hunter as away from yourself. And they don't always run at the sound of a rifle. Not even a big bore rifle. Unless you are close, like within a few hundred yards.

I've seen many a Moose and Deer stand and stare as multiple shots are fired at them.

Enjoy your hunt.
